High Performance 1 Application

The 2024 High Performance 1 Seminar will be taking place on the following dates.

  • May 24th to 26th, 2024 - National Delivery Weekend - Virtual Presentations
  • June 2024 (Various Dates TBD) - Coaching Association of Canada Modules - Virtual Presentations
  • July 8th to 13th, 2024 - In-Person Seminar in Red Deer, AB.

Requirements and Eligibility Criteria

*Please note that there are a maximum of 36 Coaches selected for the High Performance 1 Program and not all Applicants will be selected*

*The deadline to apply is April 24th, 2024 and Coach Selections will take place between May 1st and 3rd. Successful candidates will be notified of their acceptance by May 7th*

Those coaches applying for the NCCP High Performance 1 seminar must be currently coaching in a competitive stream of hockey (AAA or AA as examples) and be able to commit to attending all Virtual and In-Person components. All Coach Applications will be reviewed by the Hockey Alberta HP1 Selection Committee and will follow the selection criteria as outlined below.

*Applications must be completed in full for submission to the Selection Committee*

Priority will be given to those coaches who are:

  • Currently or will be coaching in one of the four required leagues (AEHL, AFHL, AJHL, CSSHL)
  • Head Coaches who are not High Performance 1 "trained" that require HP1 to fulfil their Coaching Requirements
  • Certified at the Development 1 Level
  • Have Coached within Team Alberta programs (Alberta Cup, Alberta Challenge, Prospects Cup)
  • Are highly recommended by their Association or Club

National coach requirements relating to High-Performance Certification and the 2024 Seminar indicate that:

All Head Coaches coaching U15, U17, U18 and Junior A teams that compete in Inter-Provincial, National Championships or the highest level as determined by the branch (Hockey Alberta), must be High Performance 1 Certified. It is recommended that all Assistant Coaches be at minimum Development 1 trained.

In Alberta, this requirement will directly affect the following leagues:

  • U15 AAA – Alberta Elite Hockey League
  • U17 AAA – Alberta Elite Hockey League
  • U18 AAA – Alberta Elite Hockey League
  • U18 AAA Female – Alberta Female Hockey League
  • Junior A – Alberta Junior Hockey League
  • Accredited Schools – Canadian Sports School Hockey League

To complete the Certification process following the seminar, coaches must meet the following criteria:

  • Completion of the Written Assignment post-task in full and meet all expected marking criteria.
  • Completion of the Coaching Association of Canada online modules - Making Ethical Decisions, Managing Conflict and Leading Drug-Free Sport
  • Completion of two Field Evaluations (one practice and one game). To complete the field evaluations coaches must meet the following criteria -
    • For coaches in the male stream, you must be the head coach at the U15 AA Level or higher, or be assistant coaching at the U15 AAA level or higher, under proper guidance
    • For coaches in the female stream, you must be the head coach at the U18 AAA level or higher or be an assistant coach at the College, University or Senior AAA level.
