Local Hockey Leaders EDI Grant

A key part of Hockey Alberta’s strategic objectives is the education and awareness of local hockey leaders to foster more equitable, diverse and inclusive organizations. To facilitate this education and awareness, Hockey Alberta is unveiling the Local Hockey Leaders EDI Grant as part of the second annual Maltreatment Awareness Day (11.4 Day).

With the support of the Hockey Alberta Foundation, Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation, NHL Legacy Project, and Rogers, Hockey Alberta is offering an opportunity for its Members across the province to take active steps towards driving new mindsets and behaviours that will ensure we have a safe sport environment - free of racism, discrimination, harassment and bullying for all participants.

ELIGIBILITY

All Hockey Alberta Members (as defined in Bylaw 2.1) are eligible and encouraged to apply for the Local Hockey Leaders EDI Grant.

GRANT FOCUS

Knowing where to start is sometimes difficult. Therefore, we are offering grants in two categories. The first allows organizations to apply for awareness and education training from a credible organization that delivers equity, diversity and inclusion fundamentals. The second allows for organizations to propose awareness and education for their organization, focused on the organization’s executive, board members and coaches.

CATEGORY DESCRIPTION DETAILS

EDI Fundamentals Core Education

  • Grant covers up to $5,000 of training for your organization towards an EDI Fundamentals Education.
  • Virtual session, three hours in length.
  • Minimum of 50 participants required. For smaller organizations, we encourage applications that include a partnership between multiple organizations.

Hockey Alberta will connect the member with an organization that provides EDI training to non-profit organizations in Canada, and who have experience working with hockey organizations.

Applicant is required to describe who the training will be intended for (Executive and/or coaches) and the impact that is expected in the organization as well as the commitment to EDI awareness now and in the future.

EDI Open Initiative - Driving Action and/ or Increasing Understanding

  • Grant covers up to $5,000 to support a specific project initiative being undertaken by the applicant.
  • Minimum of 50 participants required. For smaller organizations, we encourage applications that include a partnership between multiple organizations.

Applicant is required to describe who the training will be intended for (Executive and/or coaches) and the impact that is expected in the organization as well as the commitment to EDI awareness now and in the future.

This option requires a budget and formal plan included with the application form, including expense amount the local member is prepared to also contribute.

HOW TO APPLY

Complete the form below in its entirety. Please do not attempt to complete the form in Internet Explorer. You may SAVE FOR LATER and complete the form at a later date. When you SUBMIT, the form will automatically be forwarded to the Hockey Alberta Foundation for review.

The following information is to be included:

  • Number of participants.
  • Key target audience.
  • Description of focus area/category; describe why this is important to the association and other work the member has done or will be doing in the areas of increasing awareness and training.
  • Description of logistics including virtual or in person sessions proposed.
  • High level timeline with key milestones.

SELECTION PROCESS

Application deadline is January 8. Applications will be reviewed and grant recipients selected by a panel including Hockey Alberta’s EDI Committee and staff. Grant recipients will be announced by the end of January. Successful applicants will be required to activate and complete their program and utilize their funding by June 30. In submitting this application, funding is not guaranteed. Applications will be evaluated based on:

  • Maximizing the impact of the training (number of people across diverse roles in the organization) will be considered.
  • Collaboration within the local community or with other Hockey Alberta members.
  • A comprehensive plan that both demonstrates a commitment to EDI in the past and a forward-looking plan that will continue to drive change.

POST-EVENT ACCOUNTABILITY REPORT

All successful applicants are required to complete a post-event accountability report that includes the following items:

  • Brief summary and feedback on the successes and challenges of the project, with a focus on best practices, partnerships, creative solutions, sustainability of program, participation statistics, and leadership development opportunities.
  • Post-event budget (report of actual costs of Member EDI Initiative Grant).
  • If possible, high resolution digital photos showcasing participants, instructors, Hockey Alberta/ Hockey Alberta Foundation recognition items, etc. All participants must sign a model release form; the forms are to be submitted along with the photos.
  • Copies of promotional materials (ie. posters, infographics, print advertisements, etc.).

A summary report post implementation must be submitted by August 1. This program will also act as a pilot to assess possible future programs and options therefore, a review of all programs and post implementation interviews will be an essential part of the program.

Local Hockey Leaders EDI Grant

This grant is targeted to educate and bring awareness to our local hockey leaders, board, executives, and coaches, to foster more equitable, diverse, and inclusive associations throughout Alberta.
