2019 Coach Conference

Hockey Alberta and Hockey Calgary are excited to announce the return of the Coach Conference August 10th – 11th at Mount Royal University in Calgary. This unique event will feature speakers from the NHL, WHL, Hockey Canada, CIS and industry experts. Along with presentations, coaches will take part in interactive breakout sessions, coaches social and networking opportunities.

Coaches of all levels, from across Alberta, will have the opportunity to learn about the latest strategies, trends and technologies from some of the most respected and experienced coaches in the game.

Below are two registration options for the Hockey Alberta Coach Conference. Individual registration is $249 + GST or register 4 coaches in your MHA and take advantage of our group rate of $747 + GST. Registration includes:

Theoren Fleury - Keynote Speaker

Fleury was one of the most competitive players on the ice over the course of his 15-year National Hockey League career, and a member of the 1989 Stanley Cup Champion Calgary Flames. Along with his ability on the ice, Theo’s charitable and social wellness endeavours since his retirement have helped solidify his role as a sporting and social leader.

As our Keynote Presentation, Theo will be speaking on "The Power of Me Too" 

Geoff Ward - Calgary Flames Associate Coach

Ward is entering his second season as associate coach with the Flames, after spending three years as an assistant coach with the New Jersey Devils and prior to that, seven seasons behind the bench with the Boston Bruins in assistant role. 

He started his coaching career as an assistant at the University of Waterloo in 1989 and remained on the Warriors’ coaching staff for three years. Ward would then spend one season as an assistant coach of the Niagara Falls Thunder of the Ontario Hockey League in 1992-93, before returning in 1993-94 to Waterloo to lead the Siskins to a MWJHL championship. Ward then had a four-year stint as head coach of the Kitchener Rangers in the OHL setting a mark of 108-102-26. In 2001, Waterloo native was named as an assistant coach of the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League, taking the reins of head coach the following season and was named the Coach of the Year, winning the Louis A. R. Pieri Memorial Award.
Ward was named assistant coach of the Bruins in 2007 and was a part of the 2011 Stanley Cup winning team.

Mike Shaw and Hunter Visser - Headstartpro

Mike Shaw:
Mike Shaw, a UBC Okanagan alumni and accomplished coach, comes to us from a background in action sports and freestyle skiing. Following a traumatic accident in 2013, Mike had to leave the career he loved. But since then, he has picked himself up. Mike is now an entrepreneur, thought-leader, and accomplished speaker. He’s a subject matter expert in performance coaching and injury prevention. He’s developed strategies to help people achieve their full potential and excel in the face of adversity. In his talks, he shares a gracious perspective that will motivate you and leave you with an unforgettable learning experience.

Hunter Visser:
Hunter Visser is a retired world-cup halfpipe skier who came to the field of mental performance and injury prevention training after sustaining a career-ending concussion. Over the last seven years, Hunter has helped create, write and develop numerous performance and safety curriculums taught in public schools, sports academies, polytechnics, and private sporting clubs in North and South America. Today, Hunter works with regional to Olympic-level coaches, and an equally broad spectrum of multi-sport athletes, helping them improve focus, awareness, and mindfulness to enhance performance and prevent injuries.

Peter Anholt - Lethbridge Hurricanes General Manager

Peter Anholt enters his third full season as the General Manager of the Lethbridge Hurricanes. The Naicam, Saskatchewan native was originally hired as an Assistant General Manager by the Hurricanes on June 24, 2014. He was promoted to Head Coach and General Manager on December 10, 2014. Following the completion of the 2014-2015 season, Anholt stepped away from coaching.
Anholt is one of 16 WHL coaches to record 400 or more victories, sitting 10th all-time with 466 wins. He has posted an all-time record of 466-487-66 as a Head Coach in the WHL. Anholt is also just one of seven coaches to coach over 1,000 games in the WHL, sitting seventh all-time with 1,019 games behind a bench as a Head Coach.

Ken Babey - National Para Hockey Team Head Coach

Ken is the Head Coach of the National Para Hockey Team. Since 2015, he has led Canada to the world title in 2017 and the silver medal at the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in PyeongChang. The Canadians lost the final 2-1 to the U.S. in overtime. Prior to his position with Hockey Canada, Babey spent 27 years as the head coach of the men’s hockey team at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) from 1987-2014. He finished his career as the most successful coach in Canadian post-secondary hockey history, with 534 regular season and playoff wins. While coaching at SAIT, Babey had worked with Hockey Canada in various capacities as a coach on under-18 teams and at national championships. 

Steffany Hanlen - Founder, Quantum Speed

As one of Canada’s top athletic and mental performance coaches, strategic consultant, and inspiration expert, Steffany has worked with hundreds of professional and amateur athletes including NHL hockey players and Olympians and now over the past 10 years has been supporting and coaching entrepreneurs and business owners. 

After spending 9-years as Head Skating Instructor with the world-renowned Okanogan Hockey Schools, she applied for and received a position in 1991 with the Edmonton Oilers. 
Hired initially as their Strength and Conditioning Coach, the players soon discovered her in-depth understanding of skating. Her position quickly evolved to that of a skating coach. It was then that Steffany began to hone her gift of instruction for player development from the ‘inside’… out.
Between 1991 and 2004 Steffany used her deep understanding of skating technique, power and speed to work with some of the best skaters in the NHL.

Wayne Harris - University Dino’s Football Head Coach

For nearly 40 years, Harris has been involved with the Dinos as a player, alumnus, assistant coach, and most recently defensive coordinator. Over the course of his coaching career with the Dinos, Harris has been part of seven Hardy Cup championship teams and participated in four Vanier Cups, including the 1995 championship season under former head coach Peter Connellan. In 2006, Harris received the Gino Fracas Award recognizing the top volunteer coach in CIS football, and in 2014 he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Dinos Fifth Quarter Association in recognition of nearly four decades of involvement with the program.

In his first season at the helm, Harris guided the Dinos to just their second undefeated season in school history, with an average margin of victory over 40 points. The Dinos were ranked No. 1 in the CIS Top 10 for eight consecutive weeks, the longest stint atop the rankings for the program in three decades. His first season led him to the Canada West and CIS Coach of the Year honours. 

Bert Gilling - Mount Royal University Men’s Hockey Head Coach

Gillings is a graduate of the University of Minnesota-Duluth with a Bachelor of Arts. He then moved to Bemidji State University to complete his Masters in Sports Studies. At Bemidji State he served as the men’s hockey assistant coach and academic advisor and in 2014 he joined Mount Royal as the men’s hockey head coach. Gilling established a new culture around the team and in his first season, he led the Cougars to their first-ever playoff victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies. He has since won Canada West Coach of the Year two times.

Dean Seymour - Skills Coach Seymour Hockey

Seymour grew up in Saskatoon and played all his minor hockey in the Flyer zone and later for the Saskatoon Contacts of the Midget AAA league. After 2 all-star seasons with the Yorkton Terriers and a berth in the Royal Bank cup Dean received a Hockey Scholarship to Northern Michigan University. After college, Dean went on to play nine years of pro hockey that saw his career take him from the United States, to Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland, highlighted by an invite to the 2001 Spengler cup.

Now in Calgary Dean spends most of his time working for Hockey Canada developing  players by sharing the skills and instruction he has received throughout North America and Europe.
