With the help of the Every Kid Every Community Grant, the Mallaig Minor Hockey Association was able to bring skill development sessions for goalies and players on the U-11 and U-13 male and female teams.
This allowed skill development for these athletes without the added cost and travel time to access these opportunities elsewhere.
Through this, they were able to help strengthen and grow their female hockey team, who’s inaugural season was just last year. This growth helps to ensure that these talented athletes will continue in the sport throughout their minor hockey careers.
“Having goaltender specific training was a huge step in developing our female goaltenders. This is a difficult position to play and Netscience was crucial in helping these girls gain both skill and confidence in the net, said Ryan Gerlinsky, …. “Dream big hockey development was also instrumental in helping our female team develop their on-ice skills. All aspects of their game improved, from skating to stickhandling and shooting.”
The help and support given to these kids to grow in the sport by the entire community did not go unnoticed by the team.
"The grant money was instrumental in providing access to development and training programs that our U-11 girls team needed to develop and complete in the ECAFHL. Their development translated to competitive game play and garnered outstanding support from the community. The community gave their full support to our female team and are very proud of their effort this year,” said Laurier Jodoin, Mallaig Minor Hockey Association president.
The skill development that these athletes were able to gain this season will be instrumental to furthering their hockey careers.
"Watching the girls progress this year has been amazing! With the added support from Netscience and Dream Big Hockey Development, we’ve seen a noticeable improvement in their speed, agility, confidence and hockey sense. We are truly grateful for this support," said Head Coach Natalie Heffner.
With the help of volunteers and the Every Kid Every Community, opportunities like this can be brought to minor hockey associations across the province.
