EKEC SPEAKER SERIES COMING TO VEGREVILLE

Throughout the hockey season many team focus fundraising efforts on a charity of choice to support. TEAM ALBERTA U18 FEMALE WINS GOLD ON HOME ICE AT CANADA WINTER GAMES

The Team Alberta U18 Female team defended home ice at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer by defeating Quebec 2-1 in a thrilling gold medal final. The team finished third in Pool B, with a 0-1-2 record, but really hit their stride in the playoff round where they defeated Manitoba 3-0 in the quarterfinals and BC 2-1 in the semi-finals. Sarah Wozniewicz had a terrific tournament for Team Alberta by scoring five points in six games, while Jaden Bogden scored the winning goal in the gold medal game. Both Bella McKee and Caroline Gosling were instrumental between the pipes during Alberta’s run, with McKee sporting a .920 save %, one shutout, and the gold medal win, while Gosling finished with a 1.78 GAA and a clutch semi-final overtime win. TEAM ALBERTA U16 MALE WINS BRONZE

The Team Alberta U16 Male hockey team defeated Saskatchewan 12-0 in the bronze medal game to take home a medal for the eighth straight Canada Winter Games. The team finished first in Pool B with a 2-0-1 record during the round robin phase, defeating Manitoba and BC, while suffering an OT loss to Saskatchewan. They went on to defeat New Brunswick 8-3 in their quarterfinal game, but fell 8-4 to Ontario in the semi-finals. Matt Savoie and Dylan Guenther lead the way offensively for Team Alberta, each finishing the tournament with 13 points in six games, including five each in the bronze medal game. READ MORE >

Congratulations to the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2019 - Shirley Cameron, Theoron Fleury, Kevin Lowe, Duncan MacDougall, Bob Ridley, and the 1986-87 & 1987-88 Memorial Cup Champion Medicine Hat Tigers. GOALTENDERS: TAKE YOUR GAME TO THE NEXT LEVEL

The Hockey Alberta Goaltender Skills Camp is a weekend development camp open to male and female athletes born 2004-2011, regardless of skill level. Camps are available in Edmonton (April 13-14) and Calgary (April 27-28).

The focus is on the development of goaltender specific skills, and each goalie will attend on-ice and off-ice sessions that focus on the mental and physical aspects of goaltending. CANADA WINTER GAMES UPDATE

The 2019 Canada Winter Games are well underway in Red Deer and Team Alberta’s U16 Male team is in the hunt for medal in the Men’s Hockey tournament. The team finished first in Pool B with a 2-0-1 record during the round robin phase, defeating Manitoba and BC, while suffering an OT loss to Saskatchewan. They went on to defeat New Brunswick 8-3 in their quarterfinal game, but fell 8-4 to Ontario in the semi-finals. The chase for a medal is still alive as the team will play Saskatchewan for bronze today at 4:00pm at the Centrium. MORE INFORMATION >

The Coach of the Month award is presented every month during the Minor Hockey season, based on nominations submitted to Hockey Alberta. One minor hockey coach will be selected each month from October through March and will receive a coaching package from Players Bench Team Apparel valued at over $500, which includes a helmet, gloves, track suit, coach bag, puck bag, rink board, and coaching resources.

DISTINGUISHED LEADERS RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS

Two outstanding post-secondary students have received Distinguished Leader status from the 2018 Future Leaders Development Program. BAMFORD DONATION HIGHLIGHTS HOMETOWN HOCKEY WEEKEND

The Gord Bamford Foundation provided a $10,000 donation to The Hockey Alberta Foundation, live on Rogers Hometown Hockey in Leduc on Februrary 3. Bamford was one of the special guests in attendance as part of Rogers Hometown Hockey, and he showed his love for the sport, and the kids who play hockey, in two ways. When Bamford took to the stage for a song, he was proudly sporting a Team Alberta jersey. Then, he presented Tim Leer, the Executive Director of the Hockey Alberta Foundation, with a cheque for $10,000 in support of the Every Kid Every Community program. READ MORE >


2019 HIGH PERFORMANCE 1 APPLICATIONS OPEN

Applications are now being accepted for the 2019 High Performance 1 coaching seminar, being held in Red Deer from July 16-21.

The NCCP High Performance 1 Seminar will include professional speakers in the delivery of sessions including special teams, planning to perform, offensive/defensive team play, goaltending, game and bench management, ethics in coaching, teambuilding and many more. All Head Coaches coaching Bantam AAA, Midget AAA and Junior A teams that compete in Inter-provincial or National Championships or the highest level as determined by the branch, must be High Performance 1 Certified. PARENTS & PLAYERS GUIDE FEATURE - NUTRITION WHILE TRAVELLING

With many teams heading on the road for tournaments and Provincial Championships, it is always important to plan ahead for your player’s diet. Eating healthy while travelling can be a challenge, but is easier when the team is on the same page with the same goals! When on the road, pack items that can last without refrigeration for a few days, ie. bananas, trail mix, whole-grain bagels, and/or nut butters. If you keep a cooler in your car, other snacks you could pack include unsweetened yogurt products, cut up veggies and dip, hard-boiled eggs and/or hummus!
