Glencross Invitational Charity Roughstock Event Distributes Fundraising

Curtis Glencross and representatives from the Glencross Invitational Charity Roughstock Event, presented by PennWest Exploration, presented cheques to the beneficiaries of the event.

The charity rodeo took place on Friday, August 24th, 2012 in Innisfail, Alberta with all proceeds directed to Ronald McDonald House® Central Alberta and growing youth hockey programming in central Alberta through the Hockey Alberta Foundation. Over $196,000 was raised; $60,000 and 30 per cent of the proceeds directed to the Hockey Alberta Foundation and $136,000 and 70 per cent to Ronald McDonald House Central Alberta.

“It costs $1.2 million to operate the House every year,” says Larry Mathieson, Executive Director, Ronald McDonald House® Central Alberta. “Without the fundraising support of the community, corporations and individuals like Curtis Glencross, we wouldn’t be able to meet those annual goals. Today’s donation will help us to continue supporting sick children and their families and provide a home away from home while these families are going through a stressful time. We couldn’t be more grateful.”

Ronald McDonald House® Central Alberta is prominently located facing the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre and backing on to Gaetz Avenue. A feasibility study was conducted to evaluate the need for Ronald McDonald House in Red Deer. The study revealed that there are 33,000 pediatric stays at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre per year. One third or 11,000 of those children are from out-of-town. That’s an average of 30 out-of-town children per day. Ronald McDonald House® Central Alberta supports sick children and their families from rural communities surrounding Red Deer.

“We are ecstatic to be associated with the Curtis Glencross Invitational Charity Roughstock event and Ronald McDonald House Central Alberta. We share the common goal of giving central Alberta kids and their family hope and dreams through access to programs and services they deserve,” said Executive Director of the Hockey Alberta Foundation, Scott Robinson. “Curtis has demonstrated great leadership with this initiative and we’re proud to be connected with a great Alberta athlete and person, as well as a great charity like Ronald McDonald House.”

Youth hockey support will be directed through the Every Kid Every Community program through the Hockey Alberta Foundation. This program directs grants and resources to central Alberta communities who want to make the game more accessible for kids to play hockey.

“It is incredible to see what this hard work has gone towards. These are two amazing charities that I have been privileged to work with,” says Curtis Glencross. “I am already looking forward to the second annual event.”

The rodeo featured bull, bronc and bareback riding with some of North America’s most accomplished riders. Prior to the rodeo a poker tournament will be held in Red Deer for event sponsors at the JackPot Casino in Red Deer. Glencross spearheaded the idea for the event and will host the second annual invitational in August 2013.

Team Alberta Finishes Seventh At The 2012 National Women’s U18 Championship

Team Alberta U18 Female finished seventh at the 2012 National Women’s U18 Championship after defeating Team Atlantic on Saturday morning.

Team Alberta finished the tournament with a 2-2 record posting 12 goals for and allowing 10 goals against. Player of the game honors throughout the tournament went to Samantha Sutherland, Hannah Olenyk, Taryn Baumgardt and Ashley Morin.

While the team was full of talent they struggled to bring their high level of intensity as individuals together as a cohesive unit.

“To end Nationals on a positive note is definitely a good thing, naturally we would have liked that positive finish to have been one higher in the rankings, but we have a great group of girls who I know will learn and grow from this experience,” said Hockey Alberta’s Manager Hockey Development, Michael Kraichy.

Ontario Blue defeated Team Manitoba 4 - 2 to claim Gold and Silver, while Ontario Red defeated Team BC to claim the Bronze medal for the final results of this year’s National Championship.

Team Alberta will not get its chance at redemption until November 2013 when the U18 Nationals is hosted again, location still yet to be determined.

The National Women’s U18 Championship brings together the top female talent from across Canada. The event is held every year except when the Canada Winter Games are held (every four years).

U18 Female is the final stage of the Team Alberta Female Program and one of the initial stages that Hockey Canada uses to help identify players for the National Program.

ATB Financial is the title sponsor of all Team Alberta programs, including the ATB Alberta Cup and the ATB Alberta Challenge. The Team Alberta Male Program is a two year progression for elite athletes that begins at the ATB Alberta Cup, a U15 age level event, and progresses to the U17 age level. The Team Alberta Female Program is a two year progression for elite athletes that begins at the ATB Alberta Challenge, a U16 age level event, and progresses to the U18 age level.
