2026 Hockey Alberta Officials Summer School a Success

Registration is starting to open up around the province for the 2026-2027 hockey season.

Hockey Alberta has announced the players attending the 2026 U17 Female Summer Development Camp, taking place from July 24-27 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer.

This marks the second year of the U17 program following the transition from the former U16 camp model. In its inaugural year, the program saw strong success, with 17 athletes earning invitations to this year’s U18 Female Summer Camp. The camp continues to provide a high-performance development environment focused on preparing athletes for the next level of the female pathway.

CALGARY - 50 players from Alberta, participating in a Hockey Alberta/Hockey Canada sanctioned program, were selected over the course of two days at the 2026 WHL Draft.

Madden Daneault (Red Deer) was selected first overall by the Kelowna Rockets on day one of the 2026 WHL Draft. Daneault had a historic season in the Alberta Elite Hockey League, putting up a record point total of 149 points (65G-84A) during the 2025-2026 season and earning a silver medal at the U15AAA Provincial Championships with the Red Deer U15AAA Rebels. Daneault proceeded to have fantastic showing at the Alberta Cup, putting up 13 points (7G-6A) in six games for Team Alberta Black and earning an invite to the U16 Team Alberta Male Summer Camp.

Jevin Morrison (Sylvan Lake), also a member of the U15AAA Rebels, was selected fifth overall by the Wenatchee Wild. Wyatt Jolleys (Calgary - Seattle Thunderbirds), Micah Montgomery (Edmonton - Kamloops Blazers) and Fletcher MacDonald (Edmonton - Regina Pats) were picked consecutively, all landing in the top 10 of the draft. Brody Antignani (Calgary) was selected 12th by the Spokane Chiefs, and Artello Forestal (Edmonton) was selected 14th by the Lethbridge Hurricanes, leaving a total of seven players from Alberta selected in the first round.

The 2026 Hockey Alberta Spring Showcase presented by Direct Energy celebrates the future of the game, it also serves as an opportunity to honour a volunteer whose impact on hockey in our communities will be felt for years to come.

This year, we proudly recognize the legacy of Theodore “Ted” Hutchings.

Ted’s life was defined by dedication, leadership, and an unwavering passion for both education and hockey. Ted built his life in Red Deer alongside his wife, Lori, and their two sons, Connor and Jeffrey. Over the course of his career, he touched the lives of countless students as a teacher, administrator, and principal. Whether at Eastview, Glendale, Grandview, Delburne, Innisfail, or Penhold Crossing, Ted was known for his commitment to helping young people grow, succeed, and find their path.

Hockey, however, was always at the heart of Ted’s story.

From his early days with the Strathcona Warriors to competing in the WHL with the Portland Winterhawks and Lethbridge Hurricanes, Ted’s love for the game ran deep. He carried that passion forward into decades of coaching with Red Deer College, Red Deer Minor Hockey, and various hockey schools. He also gave his time generously as an off-ice official with the Red Deer Rebels and at Hockey Alberta events, always finding ways to stay connected to the game and give back.

Ted believed in the power of hockey to shape character, build community, and create lifelong memories.

“Ted meant so much to the hockey community and to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Ted was someone who gave so much to hockey, but even more to his community. He had a way of making everyone feel valued and connected through the game. We will deeply miss having him at the Spring Showcase, but naming this space ‘Hutches House’ is such a fitting tribute to the passion, energy, and generosity he brought to the rink every single day” expressed Michelle Skilnick, Manager Events for Hockey Alberta.

To honour Ted’s enduring impact and love for the game, the volunteer room at the Hockey Alberta Spring Showcase will be named Hutch’s House, a tribute to a man who gave so much to hockey, his community, and the people around him. His legacy will continue to be felt in every staff and volunteer who shares in the spirit of the game he loved so deeply.

RED DEER – Hockey Alberta has announced the 46 athletes invited to the 2026 Team Alberta Female Under 18 Summer Camp.

Six goalies,16 defence and 24 forwards born in 2009 or later have been invited to attend the camp at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer. Players attending this camp are competing to earn a spot on Team Alberta U18 Female, who are attending the 2027 Canada Winter Games in Quebec City from March 8-14, 2027.

Hockey Alberta previously announced the coaching staff for the U18 Female squad in February, with head coach Craig Perrett leading the way on the bench alongside assistant coaches Erin O’Toole and Izzy Cropper, and goalie coach Jamond Cardinal.

Selections were determined based on the Team Alberta scouting process throughout the 2025-2026 season. From summer camp, players continue to be scouted with their club teams until the 20 player-roster is named.

RED DEER – Hockey Alberta has announced the 80 athletes invited to the 2026 Team Alberta Male Under-16 Summer Camp.

Eight goalies, 24 defence and 48 forwards born in 2011 have been invited to attend the camp scheduled for June 30 to July 4 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer. Players attending this camp are competing to earn a spot on Team Alberta U16 Male, who are attending the 2027 Canada Winter Games in Quebec City from February 27 to March 6, 2027.

Volunteers are the heart of hockey in Alberta, and Janet Fleming is a perfect example of what it means to give back to the game.

Through years of dedication, Janet has become a familiar and valued presence within Hockey Alberta. This spring, she is once again stepping up in a big way, spending the next three weekends ensuring that every volunteer at the Hockey Alberta Spring Showcase presented by Direct Energy feels welcomed, fed, and taken care of.

From organizing meals to creating a space where volunteers can recharge, Janet works behind the scenes to make sure everything runs smoothly. Her kindness, attention to detail, and commitment do not go unnoticed, and they play a huge role in creating a positive experience for everyone involved. She also prepares and cooks select meals on her own time to help keep our volunteers fed.

The volunteer room, proudly presented by United Cycle, is a lively hub of energy and appreciation, with Janet working tirelessly behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly.

During the Alberta Cup, she also manages the scouts’ room keeping it fully stocked with snacks, tea, and coffee for over 150 scouts, ensuring everyone is taken care of and supported throughout the event.

“Janet’s dedication to our volunteers and to our volunteer program is unmatched. She ensures everyone is fed, cared for, and appreciated, and her impact on the experience we create here is truly invaluable. She is the first one here every morning and the last to leave,” says Holly McDavid, Coordinator, Operations and Volunteer Lead for the Spring Showcase.

She doesn’t only give her time for this event, Janet is always willing to lend a hand at any Hockey Alberta event. Hockey Alberta is incredibly grateful for Janet, and for the many volunteers like her who continue to give their time, energy, and heart to the game.

We’re excited to welcome players, families, fans, officials, coaches, volunteers, partners, and scouts to the 2026 Spring Showcase presented by Direct Energy at the Gary W. Harris Centre in Red Deer from April 23 to May 10.

What events make up Spring Showcase?

The Spring Showcase presented by Direct Energy features the Alberta Cup, Alberta Challenge, and Prospects Cup. Each event has a different focus:

• The Alberta Cup is a U15 male development program that gives players, coaches, and officials the opportunity to grow and develop their skills. It also gives scouts a platform to identify potential Team Alberta players.
• The Alberta Challenge a similar format, but specifically for the development of female players, coaches, and officials’ skills.
• The Prospects Cup is U13 development and identification program used to help prepare these young athletes for the Alberta Cup and Challenge.

RED DEER – Hockey Alberta has named the 160 athletes who will represent their regions at the 2026 Prospects Cup.

Eight teams will compete in a modified round-robin tournament taking place in Red Deer at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre from May 7-10. Teams are comprised of the top male athletes from across the province, with each of the eight teams’ roster including two goaltenders, six defencemen, and 12 forwards.

Hundreds of athletes competed at Regional Camps held this past weekend (April 10-12) across Alberta. Male athletes born in 2013 who were registered with a Hockey Alberta or Hockey Canada sanctioned program this season were eligible to try out.

“The Prospects Cup is the introduction to the Hockey Alberta process for these athletes as it focuses on their development and growth while also introducing the majority of them to short-term competition,” said Blake Cosgrove, Hockey Alberta’s Manager of Elite Hockey Development. “This group of players is exciting to watch, and I hope they enjoy the experience.”

The Prospects Cup is the final event of the 2026 Hockey Alberta Spring Showcase presented by Direct Energy. It is the first opportunity for athletes, coaches, therapists, equipment managers, and administrators to experience short-term competition and an introduction to the Team Alberta Program.

Hockey Alberta’s Spring Showcase kicks off with the Alberta Cup April 23-26.

The 2026 Hockey Alberta U15 AA Provincial Championships in Camrose brought together elite competition, powerful moments, and a community fully united behind the game. From emotional ceremonies to packed stands filled with young fans, the U15AA Provincial Championships held March 19–22 captured everything that makes hockey in Alberta so special.

The opening ceremonies set the tone for what would become an unforgettable weekend. A particularly powerful moment came when U11 AA player John Martin stepped forward to read the players’ pledge. Just months earlier, John and his father had been involved in a car accident while travelling to a game. As his story was shared with the crowd, it became a powerful moment of reflection. There was a shared sense of gratitude knowing that John and his dad are on the road to recovery.

Another unforgettable moment came during the honorary puck drop. In a powerful show of support, the team had shaved their heads for teammate Tyson Hogman’s brother, Carter, who is currently battling cancer. As Carter stepped onto the ice to drop the puck for his brother, there wasn’t a dry eye in the arena.

The emotion only grew moments later. Just 29 seconds into the game, Tyson found the back of the net and immediately skated to the glass to celebrate with Carter. It was a moment that transcended the game itself, one that perfectly captured the heart of hockey and the strength of family.

Beyond the opening ceremonies, one of the most impactful initiatives of the weekend was the “Hockey Hooky” game. Recognizing the team’s hard work, dedication, and passion for the game, the organizing group wanted to create an opportunity for players to showcase their love for hockey in front of their classmates.

With players coming from seven different schools across five communities, the idea was simple but meaningful, invite their classmates to experience the game firsthand. The result was incredible. Four schools were able to attend, bringing nearly 500 students from kindergarten through Grade 9 into the stands to cheer on the Vikings.

The energy in the arena was electric. Students waved handmade posters, cheered loudly, and celebrated every moment on the ice. A team sibling even suited up as the Augustana Vikings mascot, adding an extra layer of excitement for the younger fans.

“For some of the kids watching, it was their first time experiencing hockey and maybe even the start of a new passion. For others, it was an eye-opening look at the speed and intensity of the game,” said Trevor Cunningham Host Committee Member.

For the players, it was an experience unlike any other. Taking the ice in front of the largest crowd they had ever played in front of, they delivered a thrilling 3-2 victory over Calgary. The excitement and pride were evident and the memory of that game will stay with them for years to come.

Hosting the Provincial Championship was a significant milestone for the Camrose community and it came with its share of challenges. Early on, the organizing committee faced uncertainty when the Max McLean Arena ice plant went down. With time ticking, contingency plans were considered but the City of Camrose stepped up in a big way, ensuring the facility was ready in time for the event.

That level of support carried through every aspect of the championship. From sponsors and volunteers to facility staff and community members, the event became a true team effort. The sense of pride and collaboration was evident throughout the weekend, creating an environment that felt both professional and deeply personal.

Attention to detail also played a key role in elevating the experience. When it was initially determined that no logos would be installed in the ice due to time constraints, organizers saw an opportunity to do something special. Working quickly with local partners, they were able to have a Provincial Championship logo placed at centre ice just in time.

For the players, stepping onto the ice and seeing that logo reinforced the significance of the moment. It signaled that this was more than just another game, it was a championship. It also ensured that the memories captured in photos and videos would carry that sense of occasion for years to come.

From an organizational standpoint, one of the most rewarding aspects of the weekend was the feedback from visiting teams, coaches, and families. From the decorated dressing rooms to pre- and post-game interviews and the overall atmosphere, every detail was designed to make the experience special for all participants.

The impact of hosting Provincials extended far beyond the ice. For players, it was an opportunity to compete at the highest level while creating memories that may last a lifetime. For volunteers, it was a chance to come together and take pride in delivering a major event. For the community, it brought people together while supporting local businesses and showcasing what Camrose has to offer.

The weekend concluded in storybook fashion, with the Vikings capturing gold in double overtime, capping off what many described as a Cinderella season. But beyond the championship win, it was the moments in between the emotion, the connection, and the community spirit that truly defined the event.

It was a year and a championship, that will never be forgotten for the U15AA Camrose Vikings team.

Hockey Alberta is seeking proposals from qualified vendors to provide live-streaming services for the AA hockey divisions of the Alberta Elite Hockey League.

• connectivity via, at minimum, wireless Internet
• optional game analytics options
• a solution that fits within the complex environment surrounding individual facility exclusivity agreements.

EDMONTON – Kyle Rehman wasn’t sure if he would officiate one National Hockey League game, let alone a thousand.

But that’s exactly what the Red Deer native did when he accomplished the feat on March 28 during a contest between the Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings at Rogers Place. Rehman was recognized by the league, the Oilers, and Kings, receiving a Tiffany crystal from the league, jerseys from both teams as well as a pair of Adirondack chairs that had his name, the NHL logo and ‘1,000 games’ on it.

“I would have never thought to do one (game), let alone a thousand, so it’s a very special milestone for me,” Rehman said. “It comes with a lot of sacrifice, not only for myself, but for my family. It’s been an incredible journey and I’ve got a long way to go.”

Rehman said the best part of the whole evening was having his family at his side and allowing them to get some recognition for everything they’ve done for him.

“I got the chance to have my two boys on the ice with me before the game, which is something I’ll never forget. Then to have my family on the ice with me during the ceremony, it was good to get them some recognition because they’ve sacrificed so much,” Rehman said. “My wife is a rockstar. She’s pretty much a driver for the kids, taking them to all their activities, so for them to get some of that recognition was cool. Then to have my brother and my parents there as well was awesome as well. They jumped on board when I was younger and really supported, pushed, and encouraged me to go as far as I can.”

The 45-year-old referee got his start in 2000 in Red Deer where he got the opportunity to officiate U18 AAA and Senior AAA games. He moved onto the Western Hockey League shortly after and got the call to the NHL in 2007. His first game was January 22, 2008, featuring the Edmonton Oilers and Tampa Bay Lightning.

Over the course of his career, Rehman has gotten the chance to officiate some of the biggest events the NHL had to offer - Stanley Cup playoff games, NHL Global Series in Sweden, and the 2020 Winter Classic at the Cotton Bowl between the Nashville Predators and Dallas Stars.

“The whole atmosphere, being outdoors with 85,000 fans, the NHL does a really good job of putting on those types of events,” said Rehman. “Both fanbases were awesome, seeing the Nashville fans travel to Dallas and seeing how much support the city gave to the Stars … it was a great game and I’m proud to say I was part of it.”

Numerous sports, including hockey, look to recruit new officials each year, but there are challenges, especially when it comes to abusive behaviour from coaches, players, and fans. Rehman asks that spectators ease off the young officials.

“We’re losing officials every year. I have two boys that play hockey and I want them to be able to play games and leagues need referees. I think it’s important for people to be at the rink and to appreciate these games and volunteers,” Rehman said. “The younger kids are just learning … guys at the NHL level, we’re the top officials in the world and we sometimes make mistakes, just like the coaches and players because we’re human. Let the emotion of the game be on the ice, because if we continue to trend in the direction we’re going in, we aren’t going to have any officials left.”

For younger people hesitant to enter the game in the officiating capacity, Rehman’s advice is to go out there and do your best and enjoy the process of improving.

“Go out there and work hard every game. As long as you can come off the ice, look yourself in the mirror and say, ‘I left it all out there, I worked hard and I hustled’, it’s a great feeling to know you went out there and did your best,” said Rehman. “You don’t necessarily need to make the NHL either, there are a lot of great opportunities with Hockey Canada and Hockey Alberta. I hope our younger generation of officials stick with it and continue to support one another.”

RED DEER – Hockey Alberta has named the 120 athletes who will represent their regions at the 2026 Alberta Challenge, part of the Spring Showcase presented by Direct Energy.

Three from each of the North and South regions will compete in a modified round-robin tournament taking place in Red Deer at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre from April 30 to May 3, 2026. Teams are comprised of the top female athletes from across the province, with each roster featuring two goaltenders, six defence, and 12 forwards.

Regional Camps, held earlier this month, brought together the province’s top eligible athletes for evaluation. Players born in 2011 and 2012 and registered with a Hockey Alberta or Hockey Canada-sanctioned program this season were eligible to try out.

The Alberta Challenge is the sole female-only event within Hockey Alberta’s three-part Spring Showcase and serves as an introduction to the Team Alberta Program. It provides athletes, coaches, officials, therapists, and administrators with their first experience in a high-performance, short-term competition environment.

Building on that momentum, Hockey Alberta is proud to announce Spring Showcase presented by Direct Energy, marking a new chapter for one of the province’s premier high-performance hockey events.

A native of Richmond Hill, Ontario, Cassie Campbell-Pascall has deep roots in Alberta, having lived in the province for over 25 years while continuing her broadcasting career. She is widely recognized as one of the most accomplished and respected figures in Canadian hockey history. A three-time Olympic medallist, including two gold medals, an eight-time World Champion, and former captain of Canada’s National Women’s Team, Campbell-Pascall has been a trailblazer for women’s hockey both on and off the ice. She currently works as a Management Consultant with Hockey Canada.

Her legacy in the game has also been recognized provincially, as she was inducted into the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame in 2017, an honour that reflects her lasting impact on the sport and her strong ties to the province.

Campbell-Pascall’s influence extends far beyond her playing career. Following her retirement, she became one of the first women to work as a full-time analyst on NHL broadcasts, continuing to break barriers while serving as a role model for the next generation of athletes.

Now, as a Hockey Alberta Ambassador, she brings her experience, leadership, and passion for the game to communities across the province.

“I am honoured to join Hockey Alberta as an Ambassador and to give back to the game that has given me so much,” said Campbell-Pascall. “Hockey has the power to build confidence, resilience, and lifelong friendships. I’m excited to connect with young players across Alberta and help inspire them to pursue their goals both on and off the ice.”

Through her role, Cassie Campbell-Pascall will lend her voice to the continued growth of the female game, promoting greater visibility and more opportunities for young athletes across Alberta to try hockey and stay in the game, while drawing on her well-rounded experience as a player, coach, and parent.

This initiative continues to build on Hockey Alberta’s commitment to growing the game and creating inclusive opportunities for players of all backgrounds and abilities.

Cassie Campbell-Pascall also serves as a Special Advisor for the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL), further reinforcing her commitment to growing the women’s game across the country. It comes at an exciting time for women’s hockey in Alberta with the PWHL Takeover Tour having two stops in the province this month.

As part of the celebration, fans are invited to attend the Girls Hockey Takeover Tailgate on Tuesday April 7, ahead of the PWHL Takeover Tour game for the ultimate way to kick off the matchup between Vancouver Goldeneyes and Boston Fleet at Rogers Place in Edmonton. Taking place from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the Fan Park, this high-energy tailgate is all about celebrating girls and women in hockey and the incredible impact of the women’s game.

In a milestone season that marked the program’s 10th anniversary, the Cochrane Chaos Female Junior team stood at the top of the province after capturing the 2026 Hockey Alberta Provincial Championship and adding another proud chapter to a story that has been years in the making.

Beyond the banner and celebration, this year’s victory is about something deeper. It’s about the people who helped build the Chaos and the community that continues to stand behind them when it matters most.

The Chaos journey began long before their first Junior A game in 2016. The name, identity, and culture were built through years of dedication, beginning in Calgary in 2009 and carried forward by head coach Derek Loomer. Through multiple teams, levels, and seasons, the Chaos became more than just a name, it became a standard rooted in resilience, development, and connection. That foundation led to success.

From early league games to their first provincial championship in 2023, and now another title in 2026, the Chaos have grown into one of the province’s most respected junior female hockey program. Behind that success are players, coaches, and families who shaped the program along the way.

One thing our hockey community is great at is coming together when support is needed, especially for individuals like Nikki Hendrey.

Nikki Hendrey’s hockey journey is a reflection of everything the Chaos represent. Growing up in Alberta, she played through Hockey Calgary and continued her career with the SAIT Trojans before giving back to the game as a coach, working with athletes from Timbits to U18 AAA. She was part of the extended hockey community that helped build and strengthen the Chaos culture in its early years.

Today, Nikki is facing a challenge far greater than any game. She is currently battling serious and worsening heart complications. After exhausting all available treatment options in Canada, her medical team is pursuing a highly specialized procedure in Kansas City, one that may be her best chance at recovery.

For Nikki and her family, the road ahead is filled with uncertainty. The costs of travel, accommodations, and time away from home continue to grow, adding to an already overwhelming situation.

And just like on the ice, the hockey community is stepping up. For Loomer, this year’s championship carries added meaning. “I coached Nikki years ago, and she’s always been someone who gave so much to the game and to others,” he shared. “Seeing the Chaos win this year was incredibly special but it also reminds you of the people who helped build this program. Now it’s our turn to be there for her.”

The Chaos’ 2026 provincial title is a celebration of growth, perseverance, and excellence but it’s also a reminder of what makes the game truly special. It’s the lifelong connections formed in dressing rooms, the shared experiences that carry beyond the rink, and the unwavering support that shows up when someone needs it most.

RED DEER – Hockey Alberta has named the 120 athletes who will represent their regions at the 2026 Alberta Cup, part of the Spring Showcase presented by Direct Energy.

Two teams from each of the North, Central, and South regions will face off against each other in a modified round-robin tournament taking place in Red Deer at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre from April 23 to 26. Teams are comprised of the top male athletes from across the province, with each of the six teams’ rosters including two goaltenders, six defencemen, and 12 forwards.

Athletes gathered at three Regional Camps over the weekend (March 27-29) in Calgary, Red Deer and Spruce Grove. Male players born in 2011 who participated in Hockey Canada-sanctioned programs this season were eligible to try out.

“There were a lot of very talented kids from across the province who tried out for the Alberta Cup program,” said Blake Cosgrove, Hockey Alberta’s Manager of Elite Hockey Development. “While the Alberta Cup’s focus is player development, it is also a great opportunity to evaluate players for our U16 Team Alberta. We are very excited for this 2011 age group to showcase themselves at the Alberta Cup and future Hockey Alberta events.

The Alberta Cup Provides players and staff with an opportunity to experience elite-level play in a short-term competition and is part of the player evaluation process for selecting Team Alberta to compete at the Canada Winter Games, taking place in Quebec City in February 2027.

The Alberta Cup aids in the identification and selection of potential players for Hockey Alberta’s Team Alberta program, with hundreds of players annually trying out for 120 spots (20 positions on each of the six regional teams). In addition to player development, the Alberta Cup also features opportunities for administrators, referees, coaches, therapists, and equipment managers to be identified for potential positions at higher-level events such as the World U17 Hockey Challenge.

TBS, in partnership with Hockey Alberta, will be running a pre-event online store. A variety of merchandise items are available for purchase, with the deadline to place your order ending at 11:00 pm on April 5 in order to receive your merchandise by the Alberta Cup. Online orders placed by the deadline will be delivered to the event for pickup at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre on April 22. Taber Minor Hockey and the Town of Taber is one step away from something truly special, but they need the support of communities across Alberta and beyond to make it happen. After an incredible outpouring of stories, support, and community pride, Taber has been named a Top 2 finalist in the Kraft Hockeyville 2026 competition. Now, it all comes down to a national vote.

At the heart of this campaign is the Taber Community Centre, a facility that means far more than just a place to play hockey. For generations, it has been a gathering place where friendships are built, life lessons are learned, and a love for the game is passed down. Like many smalltown arenas, it represents the heartbeat of the community.

In December, an explosion at the Taber Community Centre changed everything. The loss was deeply felt, not just as a facility, but as a space that held countless memories for players, families, coaches, and volunteers. Since the explosion, teams have not been back in their rink and have been traveling to keep playing hockey.

“We had to scramble as a minor hockey association and Hockey Alberta reached out to us how they could help us. Every town, Bow Island, Vauxhall, Coaldale, Lethbridge, and Warner, reached out and we got the hockey season going on. Then we decided the town and Taber Minor Hockey, to take a run in Kraft Hockeyville,” said Daniel Remfert President of Taber Minor Hockey association. “If you watch our Kraft Hockeyville video, we’re still not in our rink. Our rink is still under construction.”

The competition for Kraft Hockeyville started on January 1^st with the nomination and rally phase, during which the community of Taber had to submit stories explaining why their community should be the next Kraft Hockeyville. Stories began pouring in from across Taber, memories of early morning practices, packed stands during playoff runs, and the volunteers who showed up year after year to make it all possible. Those stories quickly spread beyond the town, capturing the attention and support of people across Alberta and the country.

Neil P explained “A few months ago, our rink was devastated by a propane explosion. The damage was extensive, and we lost not only parts of the building but also our propane ice resurfacing machine. While repairs will cost far more than $250,000, this funding would allow us to take an important step forward. We would invest in a new electric ice resurfacing machine, replacing the propane unit with a safer, more sustainable option that modernizes our facility for the future. This prize would help rebuild more than infrastructure; it would help restore the heart of our community.”

Now, Taber has the chance to turn that momentum into something lasting. If named Kraft Hockeyville 2026, the community will receive $250,000 in arena upgrades and the opportunity to host an NHL preseason game, an experience that would bring renewed energy and opportunity back to the town.

The final step is simple but crucial. Voting opens on April 3 at 7:00 a.m. MT and closes on April 4 at 3:00 p.m. MT, leaving just a short window for supporters to make their voices heard. Every vote counts, and every vote brings Taber one step closer to the finish line.

Week two of the Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships delivered another unforgettable weekend of competition, as teams from across the province battled it out and a new group of champions were crowned. From first-time milestones to back-to-back titles, the weekend showcased the continued growth, depth, and excitement of hockey in Alberta.

One of the most historic moments came in the U13 AAA division, where the inaugural provincial championship took place. The Lethbridge Hurricanes made history as the first-ever Provincial Champions at this level, marking a significant step forward in the development pathway for young athletes in Alberta.

Across the province, the impact of hockey extended beyond the rink. Many host sites also brought the game into their community through the Hockey Alberta School Program, connecting with local students and sharing their passion for hockey. This year, Host team Rocky Mountain Raiders U13 Female AA players took it a step further by visiting schools in person; creating meaningful connections and inspiring the next generation.

On the ice, several standout performances defined the weekend. The Red Deer Cosmos Group Chiefs captured the U15 Female A Provincial Championship in a thrilling 2-1 victory, securing back-to-back provincial titles and continuing an impressive run for the program.

At the U18 AAA level, the Edmonton Junior Oilers Blue made history, capturing the AEHL Championship in Game 5 of the league final. With the win, they became the first Edmonton-based team to claim a U18 AAA league title since the 2004–05 season—marking a significant milestone for hockey in the city. The Junior Oilers Blue will now face the Okanagan Rockets in the Pacific Regional on the Road to the Telus Cup. Game 1 is set for April 3 at 6:00 PM at Rutland Arena in Kelowna, BC.

Hockey Alberta’s NHL/NHLPA First Shift program continues to make a meaningful impact across the province, as more than 20 programs wrapped up their season, with additional sessions still underway.

Among them were two successful programs hosted by Hockey Alberta in Red Deer, delivered in partnership with the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers First Shift programs. Both were co-ed, bringing boys and girls together in a fun, welcoming environment to experience hockey for the first time.

“The First Shift program is a great entry point into our sport because it removes barriers and prioritizes the joy of the game,” said Cassandra Campbell, Coordinator, Growth and Retention with Hockey Alberta. “We’ve received many positive reviews from Minor Hockey Associations across Alberta that run the program.”

In Red Deer, the program created a space where young players could build confidence while developing foundational skills in a supportive setting. “At the program Hockey Alberta runs here in Red Deer, our head coach, Brock Armstrong, does a fantastic job of blending skill development with pure fun,” Campbell added. “Getting on the ice for the first time with all the equipment can be daunting for some kids, but Brock teaches the basics through imagination and play, so the kids don’t even realize they are learning the skills that build a solid foundation in the sport. Ultimately, we want every child to complete the program with both better fundamentals and a genuine love for the sport, but it’s about more than just hockey. It’s about welcoming new families into our community with open arms.”

Over the course of six weeks, participants took part in one-hour weekly sessions focused on engagement, activity, and skill development. Each session featured small area games and skill stations, allowing players to learn key fundamentals such as skating, puck handling, passing, and shooting in an interactive way.

"The Bauer First Shift program is powerful because it invites new members into the amazing hockey community. It provides a space for players to learn the game in a safe, engaging environment and parents feel comfortable knowing that their child is getting an experience that will last a lifetime,” said Brock Armstrong Head Coach. “I love coaching the Bauer First Shift program because it allows me to coach hockey in its purest form. How the game was meant to be played."

The success of the program was made possible through the dedication of volunteers, including parent coaches, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens players, and the Red Deer Minor Hockey U18 NBC Chiefs.

For the U18 Chiefs, the opportunity to give back left a lasting impression. “Our guys don’t think of themselves as elite players or gifted coaches but to the kids, they really were,” said the U18 Chiefs head coach Duane Rolheiser. “I think that helped our players understand how much the next generation can benefit from those who’ve been there and done that.

“When Calgary Flames alumnus Joel Otto showed up, that was both a thrill and an eye-opener. Our Flames fans were at least as excited as the young players. They also got to see how important it was to Joel to get involved and give back, that was certainly a highlight,” Rolheiser said. “Without volunteer support, none of this is possible. I love that our players got a taste of what it means to give back. Not only are they helping first-time players, but they’re also learning how important it is to support their community.”

Players also saw the impact firsthand. “It was an awesome experience helping the young kids out on the ice,” said Barrett Becker Player on Red Deer U18 Chiefs. “Seeing how excited they were to learn about hockey made us want to show up each week. I hope being there with my teammates, encouraging kids and having fun, made the rink a place they want to be.”

Additionally, Becker not only saw growth in the First Shift participants, but also in himself. “I grew as an individual. I learned I had to be patient and positive because the kids were looking to us for help and encouragement. I was proud watching them improve each week and not give up.”

“For our team, being part of the First Shift program was a really good opportunity to give back to the community,” added Brody Bixby player on Red Deer U18 Chiefs. “It was important for us to show younger kids just starting out that they’re not alone, that there are always people willing to help them, and that hockey is both fun and something you can learn. Being able to support the next group coming up behind us meant a lot to our team.”

The impact extended beyond the ice, resonating with families as well. “From a parent’s perspective, it was incredible to see my teenager be part of something so positive and meaningful,” said Jacinta Parsons Mother to Brody Bixby. “It’s not often you get to step back and watch them grow not just as athletes, but as leaders and role models. Seeing Brody and his teammates support younger kids, encourage them, and help build their confidence is something I’m really proud of. These are experiences that go beyond the game and will stay with them long after their minor hockey years.”

As the sessions wrap up, the impact of the First Shift program is clear, more young players are stepping onto the ice for the first time, building confidence, and discovering a lifelong love for hockey. For families thinking about getting involved in the game, First Shift continues to serve as the perfect starting point; offering a welcoming, fun, and supportive introduction to hockey.

Beyond the competition, the 2026 Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships were filled with unforgettable moments that highlighted the true spirit of the game; community, family, and connection.

At the U13 D Provincials, the stands told a special story of their own. Generations of family came together to cheer on their players, including two grandmothers and a 90-year-old great-grandmother proudly supporting from the stands. In another heartwarming moment, two second cousins faced off on opposing teams, with their 96-year-old great-grandfather in attendance to witness it all. One U13 player also shared the experience alongside their great-grandmother, creating memories that will last far beyond the rink.

At the U13 Female A Provincials in Medicine Hat, the emotion of the moment was captured in a post-game interview with player Finley Kletzel, who reflected on both the championship win and her journey in the game. “I’m really excited, this has been a great year. I am so happy that I switched over to girls hockey from boys. It’s been amazing with all these girls, and I wish I could do it again.”

When asked what it meant to win alongside her teammates, she added: “They’re awesome. We spend every hour together, we worked hard at every practice, had hangouts, and did so much together. I’m so happy.”

In Calgary, the energy extended beyond the teams competing on the ice. Students from St. Joseph Elementary School attended the U15 Female AA Provincials on a field trip, filling the stands with signs, cheers, and excitement as they supported the athletes and experienced the atmosphere of Provincials firsthand. This is just a snapshot of the Schools Program, with many more hosted in communities across the province.

While the on-ice action takes centre stage, the success of Provincials is made possible by the incredible efforts behind the scenes. Officials are an essential part of the game, and parents play a major role in supporting them.

RESPECTING OFFICIALS:

• Provincial Championships represent the culmination of an official’s season. Their hard work, dedication and skill is recognized through their selection and participation to the event. Official are competing to participate in the finals alongside the players and coaches.
• Hockey is fast and decisions must be made instantly—negative reactions do not help.
• Verbal abuse or criticizing calls from the stands is never acceptable.

POSITIVE EXAMPLES OF PARENT CONDUCT:

• Congratulating officials on a well-officiated game when appropriate.
• Remaining calm when calls don’t favour your team.
• Modelling composure for players by focusing on effort and teamwork.

ZERO-TOLERANCE BEHAVIOUR:

• Shouting at or criticizing officials during or after the game.
• Disrespectful or aggressive language or gestures.
• Approaching officials to debate or challenge decisions.
• Comments questioning an official’s integrity, ability, or impartiality.

OUR GOAL:

By supporting officials with respect and sportsmanship, we create an environment where players, officials, and spectators can enjoy the Provincial Championships together.
