In a milestone season that marked the program’s 10th anniversary, the Cochrane Chaos Female Junior team stood at the top of the province after capturing the 2026 Hockey Alberta Provincial Championship and adding another proud chapter to a story that has been years in the making.

Beyond the banner and celebration, this year’s victory is about something deeper. It’s about the people who helped build the Chaos and the community that continues to stand behind them when it matters most.

The Chaos journey began long before their first Junior A game in 2016. The name, identity, and culture were built through years of dedication, beginning in Calgary in 2009 and carried forward by head coach Derek Loomer. Through multiple teams, levels, and seasons, the Chaos became more than just a name, it became a standard rooted in resilience, development, and connection. That foundation led to success.

From early league games to their first provincial championship in 2023, and now another title in 2026, the Chaos have grown into one of the province’s most respected junior female hockey program. Behind that success are players, coaches, and families who shaped the program along the way.

One thing our hockey community is great at is coming together when support is needed, especially for individuals like Nikki Hendrey.

Nikki Hendrey’s hockey journey is a reflection of everything the Chaos represent. Growing up in Alberta, she played through Hockey Calgary and continued her career with the SAIT Trojans before giving back to the game as a coach, working with athletes from Timbits to U18 AAA. She was part of the extended hockey community that helped build and strengthen the Chaos culture in its early years.

Today, Nikki is facing a challenge far greater than any game. She is currently battling serious and worsening heart complications. After exhausting all available treatment options in Canada, her medical team is pursuing a highly specialized procedure in Kansas City, one that may be her best chance at recovery.

For Nikki and her family, the road ahead is filled with uncertainty. The costs of travel, accommodations, and time away from home continue to grow, adding to an already overwhelming situation.

And just like on the ice, the hockey community is stepping up. For Loomer, this year’s championship carries added meaning. “I coached Nikki years ago, and she’s always been someone who gave so much to the game and to others,” he shared. “Seeing the Chaos win this year was incredibly special but it also reminds you of the people who helped build this program. Now it’s our turn to be there for her.”

The Chaos’ 2026 provincial title is a celebration of growth, perseverance, and excellence but it’s also a reminder of what makes the game truly special. It’s the lifelong connections formed in dressing rooms, the shared experiences that carry beyond the rink, and the unwavering support that shows up when someone needs it most.

RED DEER – Hockey Alberta has named the 120 athletes who will represent their regions at the 2026 Alberta Cup, part of the Spring Showcase presented by Direct Energy.

Two teams from each of the North, Central, and South regions will face off against each other in a modified round-robin tournament taking place in Red Deer at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre from April 23 to 26. Teams are comprised of the top male athletes from across the province, with each of the six teams’ rosters including two goaltenders, six defencemen, and 12 forwards.

Athletes gathered at three Regional Camps over the weekend (March 27-29) in Calgary, Red Deer and Spruce Grove. Male players born in 2011 who participated in Hockey Canada-sanctioned programs this season were eligible to try out.

“There were a lot of very talented kids from across the province who tried out for the Alberta Cup program,” said Blake Cosgrove, Hockey Alberta’s Manager of Elite Hockey Development. “While the Alberta Cup’s focus is player development, it is also a great opportunity to evaluate players for our U16 Team Alberta. We are very excited for this 2011 age group to showcase themselves at the Alberta Cup and future Hockey Alberta events.

The Alberta Cup Provides players and staff with an opportunity to experience elite-level play in a short-term competition and is part of the player evaluation process for selecting Team Alberta to compete at the Canada Winter Games, taking place in Quebec City in February 2027.

Hockey Alberta’s Spring Showcase kicks off with the Alberta Cup. The Alberta Challenge (April 30 - May 3) and the Prospects Cup (May 7-10) will also be played in Red Deer at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

The Alberta Cup aids in the identification and selection of potential players for Hockey Alberta’s Team Alberta program, with hundreds of players annually trying out for 120 spots (20 positions on each of the six regional teams). In addition to player development, the Alberta Cup also features opportunities for administrators, referees, coaches, therapists, and equipment managers to be identified for potential positions at higher-level events such as the World U17 Hockey Challenge.

TBS, in partnership with Hockey Alberta, will be running a pre-event online store. A variety of merchandise items are available for purchase, with the deadline to place your order ending at 11:00 pm on April 5 in order to receive your merchandise by the Alberta Cup. Online orders placed by the deadline will be delivered to the event for pickup at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre on April 22. Taber Minor Hockey and the Town of Taber is one step away from something truly special, but they need the support of communities across Alberta and beyond to make it happen. After an incredible outpouring of stories, support, and community pride, Taber has been named a Top 2 finalist in the Kraft Hockeyville 2026 competition. Now, it all comes down to a national vote.

At the heart of this campaign is the Taber Community Centre, a facility that means far more than just a place to play hockey. For generations, it has been a gathering place where friendships are built, life lessons are learned, and a love for the game is passed down. Like many smalltown arenas, it represents the heartbeat of the community.

In December, an explosion at the Taber Community Centre changed everything. The loss was deeply felt, not just as a facility, but as a space that held countless memories for players, families, coaches, and volunteers. Since the explosion, teams have not been back in their rink and have been traveling to keep playing hockey.

“We had to scramble as a minor hockey association and Hockey Alberta reached out to us how they could help us. Every town, Bow Island, Vauxhall, Coaldale, Lethbridge, and Warner, reached out and we got the hockey season going on. Then we decided the town and Taber Minor Hockey, to take a run in Kraft Hockeyville,” said Daniel Remfert President of Taber Minor Hockey association. “If you watch our Kraft Hockeyville video, we’re still not in our rink. Our rink is still under construction.”

The competition for Kraft Hockeyville started on January 1^st with the nomination and rally phase, during which the community of Taber had to submit stories explaining why their community should be the next Kraft Hockeyville. Stories began pouring in from across Taber, memories of early morning practices, packed stands during playoff runs, and the volunteers who showed up year after year to make it all possible. Those stories quickly spread beyond the town, capturing the attention and support of people across Alberta and the country.

Neil P explained “A few months ago, our rink was devastated by a propane explosion. The damage was extensive, and we lost not only parts of the building but also our propane ice resurfacing machine. While repairs will cost far more than $250,000, this funding would allow us to take an important step forward. We would invest in a new electric ice resurfacing machine, replacing the propane unit with a safer, more sustainable option that modernizes our facility for the future. This prize would help rebuild more than infrastructure; it would help restore the heart of our community.”

Now, Taber has the chance to turn that momentum into something lasting. If named Kraft Hockeyville 2026, the community will receive $250,000 in arena upgrades and the opportunity to host an NHL preseason game, an experience that would bring renewed energy and opportunity back to the town.

The final step is simple but crucial. Voting opens on April 3 at 7:00 a.m. MT and closes on April 4 at 3:00 p.m. MT, leaving just a short window for supporters to make their voices heard. Every vote counts, and every vote brings Taber one step closer to the finish line.

Week two of the Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships delivered another unforgettable weekend of competition, as teams from across the province battled it out and a new group of champions were crowned. From first-time milestones to back-to-back titles, the weekend showcased the continued growth, depth, and excitement of hockey in Alberta.

One of the most historic moments came in the U13 AAA division, where the inaugural provincial championship took place. The Lethbridge Hurricanes made history as the first-ever Provincial Champions at this level, marking a significant step forward in the development pathway for young athletes in Alberta.

Across the province, the impact of hockey extended beyond the rink. Many host sites also brought the game into their community through the Hockey Alberta School Program, connecting with local students and sharing their passion for hockey. This year, Host team Rocky Mountain Raiders U13 Female AA players took it a step further by visiting schools in person; creating meaningful connections and inspiring the next generation.

On the ice, several standout performances defined the weekend. The Red Deer Cosmos Group Chiefs captured the U15 Female A Provincial Championship in a thrilling 2-1 victory, securing back-to-back provincial titles and continuing an impressive run for the program.

At the U18 AAA level, the Edmonton Junior Oilers Blue made history, capturing the AEHL Championship in Game 5 of the league final. With the win, they became the first Edmonton-based team to claim a U18 AAA league title since the 2004–05 season—marking a significant milestone for hockey in the city. The Junior Oilers Blue will now face the Okanagan Rockets in the Pacific Regional on the Road to the Telus Cup. Game 1 is set for April 3 at 6:00 PM at Rutland Arena in Kelowna, BC.

Hockey Alberta’s NHL/NHLPA First Shift program continues to make a meaningful impact across the province, as more than 20 programs wrapped up their season, with additional sessions still underway.

Among them were two successful programs hosted by Hockey Alberta in Red Deer, delivered in partnership with the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers First Shift programs. Both were co-ed, bringing boys and girls together in a fun, welcoming environment to experience hockey for the first time.

“The First Shift program is a great entry point into our sport because it removes barriers and prioritizes the joy of the game,” said Cassandra Campbell, Coordinator, Growth and Retention with Hockey Alberta. “We’ve received many positive reviews from Minor Hockey Associations across Alberta that run the program.”

In Red Deer, the program created a space where young players could build confidence while developing foundational skills in a supportive setting. “At the program Hockey Alberta runs here in Red Deer, our head coach, Brock Armstrong, does a fantastic job of blending skill development with pure fun,” Campbell added. “Getting on the ice for the first time with all the equipment can be daunting for some kids, but Brock teaches the basics through imagination and play, so the kids don’t even realize they are learning the skills that build a solid foundation in the sport. Ultimately, we want every child to complete the program with both better fundamentals and a genuine love for the sport, but it’s about more than just hockey. It’s about welcoming new families into our community with open arms.”

Over the course of six weeks, participants took part in one-hour weekly sessions focused on engagement, activity, and skill development. Each session featured small area games and skill stations, allowing players to learn key fundamentals such as skating, puck handling, passing, and shooting in an interactive way.

"The Bauer First Shift program is powerful because it invites new members into the amazing hockey community. It provides a space for players to learn the game in a safe, engaging environment and parents feel comfortable knowing that their child is getting an experience that will last a lifetime,” said Brock Armstrong Head Coach. “I love coaching the Bauer First Shift program because it allows me to coach hockey in its purest form. How the game was meant to be played."

The success of the program was made possible through the dedication of volunteers, including parent coaches, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens players, and the Red Deer Minor Hockey U18 NBC Chiefs.

For the U18 Chiefs, the opportunity to give back left a lasting impression. “Our guys don’t think of themselves as elite players or gifted coaches but to the kids, they really were,” said the U18 Chiefs head coach Duane Rolheiser. “I think that helped our players understand how much the next generation can benefit from those who’ve been there and done that.

“When Calgary Flames alumnus Joel Otto showed up, that was both a thrill and an eye-opener. Our Flames fans were at least as excited as the young players. They also got to see how important it was to Joel to get involved and give back, that was certainly a highlight,” Rolheiser said. “Without volunteer support, none of this is possible. I love that our players got a taste of what it means to give back. Not only are they helping first-time players, but they’re also learning how important it is to support their community.”

Players also saw the impact firsthand. “It was an awesome experience helping the young kids out on the ice,” said Barrett Becker Player on Red Deer U18 Chiefs. “Seeing how excited they were to learn about hockey made us want to show up each week. I hope being there with my teammates, encouraging kids and having fun, made the rink a place they want to be.”

Additionally, Becker not only saw growth in the First Shift participants, but also in himself. “I grew as an individual. I learned I had to be patient and positive because the kids were looking to us for help and encouragement. I was proud watching them improve each week and not give up.”

“For our team, being part of the First Shift program was a really good opportunity to give back to the community,” added Brody Bixby player on Red Deer U18 Chiefs. “It was important for us to show younger kids just starting out that they’re not alone, that there are always people willing to help them, and that hockey is both fun and something you can learn. Being able to support the next group coming up behind us meant a lot to our team.”

The impact extended beyond the ice, resonating with families as well. “From a parent’s perspective, it was incredible to see my teenager be part of something so positive and meaningful,” said Jacinta Parsons Mother to Brody Bixby. “It’s not often you get to step back and watch them grow not just as athletes, but as leaders and role models. Seeing Brody and his teammates support younger kids, encourage them, and help build their confidence is something I’m really proud of. These are experiences that go beyond the game and will stay with them long after their minor hockey years.”

As the sessions wrap up, the impact of the First Shift program is clear, more young players are stepping onto the ice for the first time, building confidence, and discovering a lifelong love for hockey. For families thinking about getting involved in the game, First Shift continues to serve as the perfect starting point; offering a welcoming, fun, and supportive introduction to hockey.

Beyond the competition, the 2026 Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships were filled with unforgettable moments that highlighted the true spirit of the game; community, family, and connection.

At the U13 D Provincials, the stands told a special story of their own. Generations of family came together to cheer on their players, including two grandmothers and a 90-year-old great-grandmother proudly supporting from the stands. In another heartwarming moment, two second cousins faced off on opposing teams, with their 96-year-old great-grandfather in attendance to witness it all. One U13 player also shared the experience alongside their great-grandmother, creating memories that will last far beyond the rink.

At the U13 Female A Provincials in Medicine Hat, the emotion of the moment was captured in a post-game interview with player Finley Kletzel, who reflected on both the championship win and her journey in the game. “I’m really excited, this has been a great year. I am so happy that I switched over to girls hockey from boys. It’s been amazing with all these girls, and I wish I could do it again.”

When asked what it meant to win alongside her teammates, she added: “They’re awesome. We spend every hour together, we worked hard at every practice, had hangouts, and did so much together. I’m so happy.”

In Calgary, the energy extended beyond the teams competing on the ice. Students from St. Joseph Elementary School attended the U15 Female AA Provincials on a field trip, filling the stands with signs, cheers, and excitement as they supported the athletes and experienced the atmosphere of Provincials firsthand. This is just a snapshot of the Schools Program, with many more hosted in communities across the province.

While the on-ice action takes centre stage, the success of Provincials is made possible by the incredible efforts behind the scenes. Hockey Alberta extends a heartfelt thank you to all host sites, Provincial Chairs, volunteers, and planning committees for their commitment to delivering exceptional events.

The 2026 Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships are almost here and excitement is building across the province. From March 19 to April 5, Alberta will play host to 35 events across 31 communities, bringing together the province’s top teams for 13 days of championship hockey. With 31 tournament style events and four series playdowns, communities from Fairview to Medicine Hat and Cold Lake to Okotoks will be buzzing with energy over three action packed weekends.

“Our hosts have been preparing for months to deliver a memorable experience for teams and families,” says Michelle Skilnick, Manager Events for Hockey Alberta. “We’re excited to see communities come together and celebrate the game across Alberta, and we’re incredibly grateful for the time, effort, and passion our hosts pour into making each event so special.”

1. Be Ready for the Moment: Provincials are the culmination of a full season of hard work. Make sure gear is packed, schedules are confirmed, and your team is ready to compete at their best. 3. Respect the Game: Sportsmanship is key at Provincials. Players, coaches, parents, and fans are expected to respect officials, opponents, and the volunteers who make these events possible.

For Red Deer Minor Hockey, giving back to the community has become just as important as what happens on the ice. What started as a simple idea, a night of bingo with local seniors has grown into a meaningful tradition that connects players with members of their community in a unique and memorable way.

The Red Deer U15 A Ramada team began visiting the residents at Victoria Park Lodge after an idea was sparked by one of the players, whose grandmother lives at the lodge.

“It started with the idea of trying to give back to the community and not just building good hockey players but good humans as well,” said Head Coach Cody Huseby. “We got in contact with the director at the lodge and built a relationship there, and she suggested the idea of coming to play bingo. It turned into a really valuable experience for both our players and the residents. They really enjoy us coming and bringing a different kind of energy.”

During the event, players spread out across the room to sit with residents, helping them with their bingo cards while sharing conversations and building connections along the way. The team also added a personal touch by baking sweets to bring and share with the residents.

“You get to know the seniors a little bit, go through the rules, and then you have fun playing bingo,” added goaltender Owen Entz.

The impact of the evening goes beyond just a fun activity. For the players, it offers an opportunity to step outside the rink and see how small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference in someone’s day. “It means a lot, you know, just giving back to the community,” said left wing Finn Lynch.

When asked if they would take part in the event again, both players didn’t hesitate. “Yes, of course!”

The success of the initiative has also inspired others within the association. Several other teams in Red Deer Minor Hockey have organized similar visits this season, continuing the ripple effect of community involvement.

“Any time you have a chance to volunteer, whether it’s at a food bank or another initiative, it instills really good values in our players,” said Huseby. “Hopefully it encourages them to continue to give back to their communities once their minor hockey years are over. The community supports our teams throughout the season, so it’s important that we support them as well.”

Through simple initiatives like this, teams are showing that hockey can be about more than just the game. It can also be about building relationships, strengthening communities, and creating moments that leave a lasting impact both on and off the ice.

The newly revised Ambassador Program was created to strengthen community connections by inspiring youth across Alberta to try hockey and to encourage their journey in the game to continue. Through appearances, storytelling, and engagement, the program aims to grow the game at the grassroots level while highlighting positive role models who reflect Hockey Alberta’s values. When young players can see a path from Alberta to the highest levels of the game, it helps them believe they can achieve it too.

Dayle Ross, a native of Spirit River, Alberta, was drafted this season to the New York Sirens of the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL). Her journey through Alberta’s minor hockey system makes her a powerful representative of what is possible for young athletes in the province.

She began her minor hockey career with the Spirit River Minor Hockey Association, moving to the Peace Country Storm at the bantam female level before representing Team Alberta at the U18 level during the 2019-20 season. Ross then competed with the St. Albert Slash U18 AAA AFHL program in 2020-21 before continuing her development at St. Cloud State University in the NCAA.

Now competing at the professional level, Ross remains committed to giving back to the game that shaped her. “I am honoured to be a part of this program and to give back to Hockey Alberta,” Dayle Ross expresses. “I want to give back to the program that has done so much for me and helped me get this far while teaching me so much about myself. I want girls to be able to experience that too, to step out of their comfort zone and grow not just as hockey players, but as people. Having gone through that journey already, I hope I can share advice along the way and provide the kind of support or share extra knowledge that they might need along the road.”

As Hockey Alberta’s first ambassador, Ross will work to help promote participation, mentorship, and visibility for young athletes particularly in female hockey while encouraging communities across Alberta to stay active and involved in the sport.

This new initiative marks an exciting step forward in Hockey Alberta’s mission to grow the game and create inclusive opportunities for players of all backgrounds and abilities.

When Hayley Butz first stepped into an officiating clinic at 12 years old in Spruce Grove, it wasn’t exactly her idea. “My mom signed my twin brother and me up for our first clinic,” she explained. “I had always played hockey with the boys, so taking the referee course alongside them just felt natural.”

What began as a nudge from her mom has grown into a 16-season officiating career, one that has shaped her confidence, leadership, and place in the game. Today, Butz not only continues to officiate at a high level, but she also plays a key role in developing the next generation. She now assigns officials for U9, U11 and U13 female hockey in the North Region, where most new officials are attending female only Level 1 beginner clinics and Level 2 returning official clinics. Those opportunities didn’t exist when she first started. “Seeing that growth firsthand has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey,” she says.

As a female official, Butz has experienced firsthand what it means to represent more than just herself each time she steps on the ice. “There are still far fewer women than men in officiating, which makes it a unique and tight knit community,” she explains. “There’s something powerful about stepping onto the ice knowing you represent more than just yourself.”

Over the years, officiating has helped her develop skills that extend far beyond hockey. Making split second decisions under pressure, standing confidently by her calls, communicating clearly, and managing high intensity situations have all shaped her leadership style. “You learn resilience,” she says. “Those skills don’t just stay at the rink they carry into every part of life.”

For Butz, increasing female representation in officiating is about more than numbers, it’s about belonging. “It reinforces that we belong in every part of the game, not just as players,” she says. “Whether it’s coaching, administration, management, or officiating, women deserve to take up space in all areas of hockey.”

Officiating has also allowed her to continue competing at a high level, staying deeply connected to the sport she loves. “When girls see women officiating, it expands what they believe is possible for themselves. The more visible we are, the more normal it becomes.”

This year, Butz will once again will take the ice at USPORT Nationals, the top university championship in Canada, an achievement that represents years of dedication and growth.

“The first time I was invited in 2024 felt surreal and this year feels just as meaningful,” said Butz.

Like many high achievers, she admits there were moments of imposter syndrome along the way but being selected alongside some of the most respected officials in the Country has reinforced her belief in herself. “It’s a reminder that the work, the sacrifices, and the belief were worth it” Butz said.

“Officiating doesn’t just grow your hockey IQ,” she says. “It grows your leadership, confidence, and voice. Those are skills that will serve you for life.”

On International Women’s Day, her message to girls and women considering officiating is simple “Take the leap. Yes, there is pressure. Coaches, players, and fans can be loud, but learning to manage that pressure and stand confidently in your decisions builds character in a way few other experiences can.”

From her early days in Spruce Grove to the national stage, Hayley Butz’s journey reflects the growing presence of women in officiating and the importance of visibility in every corner of the game. Each time she steps onto the ice, she’s not just calling a game; she’s helping shape what the future of hockey looks like.

INNISFAIL – The 1978-79 hockey season was a significant year for the growth of female hockey in the province of Alberta – with the Innisfail Lions female team leading the way with their on-ice achievements.

That season, the Lions captured the first-ever Alberta Amateur Hockey Association Intermediate B Ladies hockey provincial championship – an event that they also hosted. And then, they proceeded to finish fourth at the Western Canada Shield in Calgary, playing against some of the top Senior B teams from Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

The 1978-79 season was the culmination of almost a decade of community effort in Innisfail that saw the recognition and growth of a female hockey program in the town. That work was paralleled by the efforts of other central Alberta communities to operate female teams who played league, tournament and exhibition games across the province.

At the first-ever Intermediate B Ladies provincials, the Lions put on an impressive show on home ice, defeating Medicine Hat, Jasper and Calgary Gold ‘n Blues before beating University of Alberta 4-1 in the gold medal match.

By virtue of their provincial title, they were invited to participate in the Western Canadian Shield. Calgary wanted to host an eight-team tournament, and the Lions showed they belonged with Senior teams, finishing in a three-way tie for first in their pool with a 2-1 record. They ranked second based on goals for and against, meeting Calgary Wild Roses in the bronze medal game. Betty Mangan was named the tournament’s most valuable goaltender.

Team members for that memorable season were Betty Mangan, Wendy Wittchen, Mona McLean, Margaret Dittrick, Donna Curtice, Brenda Puddifant, Lorna Marshall, Trudy Strasser, Susan Morris, Bonnie Engman, Deanna Miyauchi, Deirdre Bryan, Yvonne Leavitt, Rachel Leavitt, Kelly Black, Colleen Finney, Shawn Bryan, Linda King, Valerie Kinsella, Jim Miyauchi and Larry Leavitt (coaches), Myrt Puddifant (manager), and Jack Kinsella (trainer).

The Innisfail Lions had formed in December 1972 when two teachers and a few girls went to Innisfail minor hockey and were granted permission to form a team. The team operated independently, playing a few exhibition games that first season, and was sponsored by Innisfail Lions Club, who bought the team’s first sweaters and other equipment.

Between 1972 and 1980, when most of the team stopped operating as players graduated high school and moved on with the next stage of life, the Innisfail Lions were the best-known female hockey team in central Alberta, and probably the third-best female team in the province – behind top senior teams Edmonton Chimos and Calgary Wild Roses.

“We were just a bunch of small-town girls who loved to play and were pretty good. We had no expectations, we just loved playing hockey and having fun with the team,” recalled Brenda Sawyer (nee Puddifant). “The girls on the team were very passionate about the team and the fun we were having. It truly was the best years for many of us.”

The Lions were perennial league champions – winning their division in the Town and Country league each year until 1978-79 against teams like Bowden, Olds, Carstairs, Didsbury, Rimbey, Spruceview and Rocky Mountain House. They also played regular games against University of Alberta, Bon Accord and Ardrossan.

Then, for the 1979-80 season, the Central Alberta Intermediate Women’s Hockey League was formed. It was the first women’s hockey league to operate separately from male leagues in Canada, and included rules specifically for female hockey. Didsbury, Olds-Carstairs, Sylvan Lake and Rocky Mountain House joined Innisfail in the new league – and Innisfail continued its dominance claiming the inaugural league title.

The team was also a two-time medalist at the Alberta Winter Games representing Parkland (Zone 4) region. They won bronze in 1978 in Medicine Hat, and then returned to claim the gold medal in 1980 in Grande Prairie. They defeated Lethbridge to win the gold, and offensively the team was led by 14-year-old Wendy Wittchen of Red Deer who scored nine goals in five games. Wittchen had joined the Lions starting in 1977-78, when she aged out of Tom Thumb hockey in Red Deer. In her second season in 1978-79, Wittchen led the team in scoring with 48 goals and 33 assists. Other top scorers that season included Brenda Puddifant (25 goals, 33 assists), and Deanna Miyauchi (25 goals, 17 assists).

In addition to the team’s success in league play, and at provincial and regional events, they also excelled in tournament play – winning tournaments in Innisfail and Lethbridge multiple times, as well as a tournament in Banff. They also regularly attended tournaments in Coleman and Olds. And in 1980, after the Winter Games title, the team travelled to Coquitlam, BC, where they won that tournament – defeating North Delta in overtime. They also defeated UBC and SeaPort (a combined team from Seattle and Portland). The team did not defend their Alberta provincial title that year as they had already committed to attending the Coquitlam tournament which was held at the same time.

The team largely disbanded after 1980, as players headed off to college and other avenues of life. Deanna Miyauchi and Roxanne McKean went on to play for Edmonton teams including playing for the renowned Edmonton Chimos. Sawyer played one year with the Edmonton Capitals, but recalls it wasn’t the same.

“It was the Innisfail Lions Ladies hockey team that was the best years of hockey, it just wasn’t the same camaraderie we had,” Sawyer said.

In addition to the team members on the 1978-79 provincial championship team, the following players and team staff were members of the Innisfail Lions female hockey teams:

• Team Staff: coaches Mel Weiss, Frank Campbell, Wayne Sim, Bill Young, Wally Walkowsie, Ray Ouellette, John Wittchen, Darryl Mirakami; manager Ted Kinsella, and statistician Pat Hodges.

The team did have a reunion over Christmas in 1985, when 18 team members got together for a game against their husbands, fathers and brothers.

In the spirit of International Women’s Day (March 8), we sat down with She Leads Hockey Grant recipient and coach Izzy Cropper. For Cropper, coaching wasn’t something she always planned, it was something that grew naturally from her love of the game and the mentors who shaped her journey along the way. While a love for hockey was always part of her family’s story, it was during her early years on the ice that Cropper began to truly understand the lasting impact sport could have.

“I had so many positive influences growing up through hockey and the other sports I played,” she shared. “By Grade 7 or 8, I started helping with learn-to-play programs, jumping on the ice with my brother’s teams, assisting coaches, and working with goalies whenever I could”. That early involvement sparked something deeper; a realization that hockey could be just as meaningful from behind the bench as it was on the ice.

Her coaching journey has continued to evolve, recently strengthened by being named a recipient of the She Leads Hockey Grant, an initiated promoting female leadership through supports from Hockey Alberta and the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation. With support from the grant, Cropper is building on the success of a female coaching clinic she helped launch in Edmonton last year. “The grant is helping us bring the clinic back for a second year,” she explained. “This time, we’re hoping to expand it to not only supporting coaches, but also creating leadership development opportunities for U15, U18, and university level players”.

The initiative is about more than skills; it’s about strengthening the future of the game by investing in those who will lead it, and the timing couldn’t be better. Alberta has seen a remarkable increase in female coaches in recent years, a shift Cropper believes is essential for the continued growth of hockey.

“Representation matters,” she said. “Growing up, I only had one female head coach and a handful of female assistants. I was fortunate that they made a huge impact on me but without seeing women in those roles, I don’t know if I would have envisioned myself coaching”.

Today, she hopes to help create a new reality, one where female leadership behind the bench is no longer the exception, but the norm. “I think as the game continues to evolve, in order for us to evolve with it, we need females who are behind the bench that have lived it and who understand it”.

For Cropper, coaching is about more than systems and strategies, it’s about creating environments where players feel confident, supported, and empowered to grow. Sometimes, that starts with the little things, like music at practice, team meetings, helping create a positive, and a welcoming atmosphere.

More importantly, she focuses on helping players recognize their progress. “Sport is an incredible environment to learn life skills,” she said. “Growth mindset, confidence, resilience, those lessons carry far beyond the rink.” Her goal is to ensure players leave the game with more than improved technical ability but with belief in themselves and their potential.

Looking ahead, Cropper has a simple but powerful message for the next generation of girls in hockey “We need you. We need you in coaching roles, as officials, trainers, and on the board of directors for your local club.”

She encourages young players to seek out opportunities, embrace experiences, and never be afraid to ask for guidance. “People want to help you get there and the ideas and perspectives you bring will help move the game forward,” said Cropper.

Through her work, Cropper is helping shape a future where leadership in hockey is more inclusive, more representative, and stronger than ever.

The Lakeland U13 AA Panthers are more than just a hockey team, they are a reflection of the strength, diversity, and unity found across the Lakeland region.

Drawing athletes from communities including Cold Lake, Bonnyville, Elk Point, and Ardmore, the Panthers roster represents players from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. This season, the team has brought together athletes who once competed against each other and helped transform them into a close-knit group united by a shared love of the game.

“It was really neat to see these girls go from competing against each other in the EAFHL to playing on the same team,” said parent Jena Colbourne. “Some of them the last time they met was in a heated overtime game for a medal in league. Others were playing mainstream and hadn’t played on an all-female team before. To become one family all with different backgrounds, schools, and communities was so amazing to watch as a parent.”

Among the 17 players on the roster, the team also features strong Indigenous and Métis representation, with athletes representing Cold Lake First Nations, Frog Lake First Nations, Goodfish Lake First Nations, Saddle Lake First Nations, Ermineskin Cree Nation, and the Kikino Métis Settlement, along with Métis athletes from across the region. For families and players alike, that representation has created meaningful opportunities to learn from one another and build connections that go beyond the rink.

“It’s very special because for our family it has exposed my daughter to cultures and traditions she may not have understood otherwise,” Colbourne shared. “But importantly, it’s brought our area together in ways other events never would. You’re battling on the ice together and getting to know other families, helping carpool or fundraise to ensure everyone has what they need for their daughter to succeed.”

Another important influence for the Panthers this season has been assistant coach Cassidy Dion, a former NCAA Division I player who has quickly become a role model for the team. Coming from a nearby community herself, Dion’s journey has helped players see what is possible through dedication and belief in themselves.

“For her to come from a community 45 minutes away from us and make it to Division I has shown these girls that they can do it. Cassidy always speaks positively of her experiences; she finds the strengths each girl has and mentors them to do their best,” said Colbourne.

For the players themselves, the impact of the season has been just as powerful. “This has been my favourite team,” said Panthers forward Vienna Colbourne. “We didn’t know each other at the start and now we’re family. I’ve never felt this way about a team for any sport before. We all look after each other and cheer each other on. I love hockey so much and I never want this season to end.”

With many players graduating from the U13 level at the end of the season, the success of the Panthers has sparked excitement about the future of female hockey in the Lakeland region. Families and supporters hope the momentum created by this group will continue to open doors for new opportunities and development pathways for young athletes.

The growth is already visible. “We had nine females registered in U7 this year,” said Colbourne. “Our house teams from U13 through U18 had maxed out rosters and our U13 AA Panthers have been having the best season to date. It is beyond amazing to see the growth in female hockey.”

As participation continues to rise, the Panthers have become a powerful example for younger girls watching from the stands or just stepping onto the ice for the first time.

Their message is simple. “Do it!” Colbourne said. “Hockey is for girls, it’s for everyone. No matter where you come from, you’ll find your crew, your family, and your team.”

As a recipient of the Hockey Alberta She Leads Hockey Grant Supported by the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation, the U13AA Lakeland Panthers are taking the next step in their development. The funding will bring in expert support in sports nutrition, mental performance, power skating, and elite off-ice training; all designed to help these athletes grow both on and off the ice.

March 8 – On International Women’s Day Hockey Alberta is committed to growing the game by creating more opportunities, strengthening pathways, and supporting girls and women at every stage as players, coaches, officials, and leaders.

We believe the future of hockey is inclusive, and we are proud to work alongside our Members, Minor Hockey Associations, teams, volunteers, and families across Alberta who are helping make that future a reality.

Not only is the game growing, but so is the leadership behind it. Women now make up 41% of Hockey Alberta’s staff, and the Hockey Alberta Board is proudly comprised of 50% women, a powerful reflection of the progress and representation shaping the future of the game.

“The rise in female representation across our sport is creating a stronger, more inclusive hockey system. When women are involved in every layer, from the ice to the boardroom, we build an environment where every player can see themselves reflected, supported, and empowered to succeed,” said Kendall Newell, Senior Manager of Competition at Hockey Alberta.

In general, Hockey Alberta is seeking proposals that include the following:

• Supply, configuration, and ongoing maintenance of 35-40 laptops and related hardware.
• Managed IT support for all staff, both on-site and remote, including help desk services and troubleshooting.
• Implementation and management of cyber security solutions, including endpoint protection, firewalls, regular vulnerability assessments, and staff cyber security training.
• Provision of secure remote access for off-site staff.
• Regular software updates, data backup solutions, and disaster recovery planning.
• Asset management and inventory reporting.

Submission deadline for proposals is Friday, April 17.

Hockey Alberta and Hockey Alberta Foundation are seeking proposals from qualified public accounting firms to provide external audit services under a three-year contract beginning with the fiscal year ending July 31, 2027.

The successful firm will conduct the audit in accordance with Canadian Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (Canadian GAAS) and prepare financial statements in accordance with Canadian Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations (ASNPO)

RFP 26:01 Audit Services outlines the specifications and requirements of Hockey Alberta and Hockey Alberta Foundation. We invite firms with demonstrated experience in the charitable and not-for-profit sector to submit a proposal.

Minor hockey players, this is your chance!

Hockey Canada and OK Tire are teaming up to help cover next season’s registration fees and support local hockey associations across the country with the Drive to Play program.

If a Minor Hockey player wears their jersey into any OK Tire dealership across the country, they will be able to scan a QR code, fill out a small questionnaire, for a chance to win $500 to put towards their Minor Hockey fees for the next season. There will be 13 winners, 1 from each member branch. The winning player’s Minor Hockey team will also win $1,500 to support local hockey initiatives thanks to OK Tire.

The program will end on May 31 with the winners announced on June 20.

Hockey Alberta and the Hockey Alberta Foundation are mourning the loss of Perry Cavanagh (1959–2026), a dedicated volunteer and respected community leader whose influence on youth hockey and amateur sport in Alberta extended across more than two decades.

Perry was more than a volunteer, he was a builder of community. His passion for sport and belief in the power of hockey to bring people together shaped countless experiences for athletes, families, and fellow volunteers across Alberta.

At the provincial level, Perry brought his voice and leadership to Hockey Alberta as a Board of Director for four years (2011-2014). He later joined the Hockey Alberta Foundation, where he worked tirelessly to advance its mission to inspire Every Kid and Every Community’s passion for hockey.

His legacy within Calgary’s hockey community was formally recognized in 2022 with the renaming of Max Bell Arena 2 to the Perry Cavanagh Arena, a tribute that ensures future generations will continue to skate in a space shaped by his dedication.

Perry’s lifelong commitment to the game and to community service will be further recognized this year, as he is set to be named the Robert Clark Legacy Award at the 2026 Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame Induction Gala, a fitting honour for someone whose influence will continue to be felt for generations.

Through every role he held, Perry believed in hockey’s ability to create connection, opportunity, and belonging. His legacy lives on not only in arenas and events, but in the countless lives he touched along the way.

Hockey Alberta extends its heartfelt condolences to Perry’s family, friends, and the many members of the hockey community who were fortunate to know him.

On February 25, we recognize Pink Shirt Day, a reminder that preventing bullying and building respectful environments is everyone’s responsibility.

In hockey, that message matters.

Hockey should be a place where players feel safe to try, to fail, to grow, and to belong. The tone we set in locker rooms, on benches, in the stands, and online shapes that experience. Small actions, positive or negative, add up quickly.

Pink Shirt Day is not just about wearing pink. It’s about choosing the kind of culture we want in our game.

At Hockey Alberta, we believe hockey should be grounded in respect, built on challenge and support, a place where every player feels they belong. That belief comes to life through everyday behaviour: how we speak to officials, how teammates treat one another, how coaches lead, and how families model respect in the stands.

Pink Shirt Day gives us a visible moment to pause and ask:

• Are our teams safe spaces?
• Do our players feel respected and included?
• Are we modeling the behaviour we expect from others?

While Pink Shirt Day shines a spotlight on anti-bullying efforts, the work itself is ongoing. Across Alberta, we see that commitment every day, in the coaches who lead by example, in teammates who choose support over negativity, and in players who understand that respect matters.

Many of those players have chosen to make that commitment visible by signing the Hockey Alberta Player Pledge, putting words to the culture they want to build.

As one U9 player shared after signing the Player Pledge, “I want to be the best teammate to my teams and a role model to others.”

That simple statement captures what safe sport is really about.

Another U18 player explained their decision this way: “I believe it’s important to create a community where everyone feels welcome and comfortable to be themselves.”

And for some athletes, the pledge carries even deeper meaning. One player noted, “The player pledge means so much more to me as a hockey player of Asian descent… having the pledge helps create that atmosphere of respect and solidarity.”

These voices remind us that inclusion isn’t just a concept. It is personal.

A Simple Way to Take Action: The Player Pledge

The Hockey Alberta Player Pledge is a personal commitment to compete with integrity, treat others with respect, and help make hockey a safe space for everyone.

Players and coaches can sign on individually. Those who do receive a personalized certificate recognizing their commitment, a visible way to say, this is the standard I stand for.

As one U18 coach put it, “What we do and say on and off the ice matters more than the score.” That mindset is what builds strong teams and stronger communities.

If you’re ready to make that commitment, we encourage you to sign on to the Player Pledge and invite others to do the same. Individuals who complete the sign-on form will receive their own personalized certificate, something players can be proud to share and display as a reflection of the culture they want to build.

On February 7, the Foothills Bisons brought their community together in Nanton for one of their most meaningful traditions, Bisons Day. This year’s event proved once again that hockey is about far more than what happens on the ice.

With an 80’s theme honouring the program’s roots dating back to 1985, the day blended fun, nostalgia, and heartfelt purpose all in support of U15AA Head Coach’s wife Marnie Eckberg, as she continues her battle with cancer.

The afternoon began with the U11AA Bisons taking to the ice against Medicine Hat, with opening ceremonies led by Foothills Minor Hockey AA Director Steve Debienne. In his remarks, Debienne spoke about the significance of Bisons Day and shared Marnie’s story. In a moment that captured the spirit of the day, Marnie herself performed the honorary puck drop, a powerful reminder of the strength behind the cause.

As the U13AA game got underway, the focus shifted from the ice to the foyer, where a spirited fundraising challenge was unfolding. Members of the Willow Hills Refereeing Association pledged to join the 80’s theme in a big way with mullets or shaved heads depending on the amount raised.

After surpassing the $1,000 mark and ultimately raising $1,150, referees Jeff Long and Brady Humphrey fulfilled their promise by shaving their heads in support of Marnie. They were soon joined by more than a dozen players from the U11AA, U15AA, and U18AA teams, along with the entire U11AA coaching staff; a moving show of solidarity that quickly became one of the day’s most memorable moments.

Live music from Chase Morgan and Brettyn Rose longtime supporters of the event added another emotional layer to the afternoon. Morgan, last year’s Bisons Day recipient, continues to battle a serious autoimmune disease, making his return to perform especially meaningful.

Before the U18AA matchup against the Okotoks Oilers, another powerful moment unfolded. Players from the U16AA Oilers, a team made up of athletes from both Okotoks and Bisons, programs presented Marnie with a cheque raised through their own team efforts. Contributions from multiple Okotoks teams, including silent auction items, highlighted how this event transcended competition and united neighbouring hockey communities in support of one of their own.

Throughout the day, a large silent auction, merchandise sales, and community donations helped raise approximately $22,800 making this one of the most successful Bisons Days to date.

Reflecting afterward, Marnie shared “it is hard to express what yesterday meant to our family. Each game, each hug, each conversation of hope and support lifted us with strength to keep fighting this battle with cancer. The hockey community is incredible in how it comes together to help out. We are beyond grateful for everything the Foothills Bisons did to support us. We were so touched and honoured to be this year’s recipient of Bisons Day. Thank you from our hearts to yours.”

Bisons Day continues to stand as a powerful reminder that hockey is more than a game it’s a community and on February 7 that community showed up in full force.
