Assistant Coach
The Bonnyville Jr. A Pontiacs are seeking a highly motivated and passionate hockey professional to join our organization as a full-time Assistant Coach.
This role is ideal for an individual who has a proven ability to teach and develop players, possesses strong communication and organizational skills, and thrives in a fast-paced environment where multitasking is essential.
The successful candidate will play a lead role in individual player development, skills coaching, academy programming, and strengthening relationships throughout the local hockey community. They will work closely with the Head Coach, General Manager, Bonnyville Minor Hockey Association (BMHA), and other stakeholders to help advance the organization’s commitment to excellence both on and off the ice.
Primary Responsibilities
Player Development & Skills Coaching
- Take a lead role in the planning and execution of individual and team skill development.
- Design and implement position-specific and individual development programs.
- Conduct video-based skill analysis and player feedback sessions.
- Track player progress and maintain development plans throughout the season.
- Assist players in achieving advancement opportunities to higher levels of hockey.
- Stay current on modern coaching techniques, player development strategies, and skill acquisition models.
Assistant Coaching Duties
- Be available for 95-100% of team practices and games.
- Assist in practice planning and execution.
- Support game preparation and opponent pre-scouting.
- Assist with video review, breakdowns, and presentations.
- Support team systems implementation and tactical development.
- Contribute to recruiting and player evaluation efforts.
- Assist with off-ice training and player wellness initiatives.
- Foster a positive, competitive, and accountable team culture.
- Promote professionalism and leadership within the dressing room.
Pontiacs Academy Program
- Assist in the planning, delivery, and growth of the Pontiacs Academy Program.
- Lead on-ice skill sessions and development camps.
- Develop age-appropriate curriculum focused on skill acquisition and hockey IQ.
- Serve as a positive role model and mentor for academy participants.
- Work collaboratively with academy stakeholders to ensure a first-class development experience.
BMHA Liaison & Mentorship Program
- Serve as a key liaison between the Bonnyville Jr. A Pontiacs and Bonnyville Minor Hockey Association.
- Build strong relationships with local coaches, players, and families.
- Support the development and implementation of the Pontiacs Mentorship Program.
- Assist with coach mentorship and educational opportunities within BMHA.
- Participate in community development initiatives and grassroots hockey programs.
- Help create a clear development pathway between minor hockey and the Pontiacs organization.
Organizational & Business Operations
- Assist in the planning and execution of summer camps, ID camps, and selection camps.
- Support billet recruitment and retention initiatives.
- Represent the organization professionally within the community.
- Assist with team events, sponsorship functions, and community appearances.
- Support organizational projects and initiatives as assigned.
- Demonstrate strong organizational and multitasking abilities while balancing coaching, academy, and community responsibilities.
Qualifications
- Previous coaching experience at Junior, AAA, Prep School, Academy, or Elite Minor Hockey levels.
- Strong background in skill development and player advancement.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Hockey Alberta Development 1 Certification (minimum requirement).
- Additional Hockey Canada or Hockey Alberta certifications considered an asset.
- Experience with video analysis software considered an asset.
