General Manager & Head Coach

The Drayton Valley Thunder, a proud member of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL), is searching for an experienced, dynamic, and dedicated individual to lead our organization as Head Coach and General Manager. This is a full-time position that reports directly to the Vice-President, Hockey Operations and is responsible for all aspects of the Thunder’s on-ice hockey operations and overall strategic direction.

Consideration will be given to candidates applying for the combined Head Coach/General Manager role, or for those interested in either the Head Coach or General Manager role individually.

The successful candidate will be a visionary leader with a strong commitment to player development, both on and off the ice, and a proven track record of success at a highly competitive level. This individual will be the key representative of our organization within the Drayton Valley community and the AJHL.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Hockey Operations:

• Coaching & Player Development:

o Oversee all aspects of on-ice hockey operations, including planning and execution of practices, game strategies, and player development programs.

o Implement game concepts, offensive and defensive systems, and special teams play.

o Conduct video analysis and game breakdowns to enhance individual and team performance.

o Mentor and guide players in their athletic and personal growth, preparing them for advancement to collegiate, university, or professional hockey.

o Oversee and implement off-ice training and strength & conditioning programs.

o Supervise and manage the conduct of players both on and off the ice, enforcing team policies and disciplinary standards.

 

• Recruitment & Scouting:

o Identify, recruit, and evaluate top-quality junior caliber players from various feeder systems

o Establish and maintain an effective recruitment program, including attending scouting events and managing a network of scouts.

o Familiarity with NCAA, U Sports, and collegiate hockey programs is essential.

 

• Staff Management:

o Select, supervise, and evaluate assistant coaches, trainers, equipment managers, and other hockey operations staff.

o Foster a collaborative and professional environment among all staff members.

 

 

General Manager Responsibilities:

• Team Administration & Logistics:

o Responsible for the day-to-day management of hockey operations, including scheduling, travel planning, and equipment management.

o Prepare and manage the annual budget for the hockey club’s operations, optimizing expenses and operating within approved constraints.

o Maintain accurate records and documentation for players and team operations.

 

• Community & Public Relations:

o Serve as an effective spokesperson for the Team, promoting and enhancing the image of the Thunder within Drayton Valley and the wider community.

o Build and maintain strong relationships with community members, sponsors, and local media.

o Actively participate in community outreach and public relations appearances, including fundraising events and hockey schools/camps.

 

• League & Organizational Relations:

o Work closely with the Vice-President, Hockey Operations, providing regular updates on hockey operations and financial performance.

o Maintain strong relationships with the AJHL league office and opposing teams.

o Ensure compliance with all AJHL and Hockey Canada rules and regulations.

 

Qualifications:

• Minimum of 5 years of coaching experience, preferably at the professional, collegiate, or major

junior levels.

• Proven success as a Head Coach and/or General Manager in a highly competitive hockey environment.

• High Performance 1 (HP1) coaching certification is mandatory for the Head Coach role.

• Vast hockey knowledge and a clear understanding of the Alberta Junior Hockey League and its

feeder systems.

• Strong leadership, organizational, and human resource management skills.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with players,

staff, parents, media, and the community.

• Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, and to travel extensively with the team.

• Detail-oriented with a strong work ethic and a commitment to continuous improvement.

• Proficiency with modern media, social media, and other technological coaching tools.

• Integrity, professionalism, and a dedication to the dignity of all individuals, promoting fair and

equitable treatment.

 

Compensation:

Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
