About the Alberta Winter Games

The Alberta Winter Games is a multi-sport event for developing athletes, aged 11-17 years old. The Winter Games were first hosted in 1976 in Banff, and occur each even-numbered year. The athletes are selected to represent the eight zones in Alberta in 20 sports such as hockey, badminton, gymnastics, skiing and skating.Hockey Alberta coordinates the ice hockey portion of the Winter Games, as a core segment of its Development Program.

The Alberta Winter Games are the start of the Hockey Alberta Development Program, and run every second year, alternating with the Peewee Prospects Cup. The Alberta Winter Games provide second-year Peewee athletes, as well as coaches, trainers and administrators an opportunity to discover the qualities of competitive hockey in a well-organized regional camp and select team competition. Male athletes born in 2005 are eligible to compete in the 2018 Alberta Winter Games.

The Alberta Winter Games begin with four regional camps designed to allow athletes, coaches and trainers to show their skills and receive top-level instruction and evaluation. The top 40 athletes from each regional camp (two teams from each camp), six coaches, two coach mentors and two directors of operations will be selected to participate in the Alberta Winter Games.
