Arctic Winter Games Coach Application

Hockey Alberta is looking for coaches for the Arctic Winter Games, held in Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska, March 9-16. Team Alberta North is looking for two head coach and four assistant coaches to fulfill roles with the U15 Male Team and Junior Female Team (one head coach and two assistant coaches each).

To be eligible, coaches must:

  • Reside on or above the 55th parallel in Alberta (eligible communities).
  • Have relevant coach certification:
    • Head coaches: NCCP Development 1, evaluated with NCCP Making Ethical Decisions.
    • Assistant coaches: NCCP Coach 2 Level, evaluated with NCCP Making Ethical Decisions.
  • Trained in Respect in Sport for Activity Leader.
  • Hold a valid passport.
  • Provide a Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector Check within one year of the Games (anytime after March 16, 2023).

Applicants should have prior experience and knowledge working with minor hockey teams or tournament/short-term competition.

  • Selection Camp:
    • Male Selection Camp: November 24-26 in Peace River
    • Female Selection Camp: December 1-3 in Manning
  • Team training
  • Team Alberta North staging
  • Arctic Winter Games: March 9-16, in Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska

Each hockey team is comprised of 17 players. Teams participate in a round-robin tournament to determine seeding for medal-round pairings. One gold ulu is awarded in each division. Teams that regularly participate in ice hockey include Alaska, Yukon, Alberta North, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

The Arctic Winter Games are the world’s largest northern multi-sport and cultural event. The Arctic Winter Games are a celebration of athletic completion, culture, friendship and cooperation between northern contingents. Athletic competition features sports that enjoy worldwide popularity alongside traditional Arctic Sports and Dene games. The cultural component is a pillar of the Games, featuring visual arts, dance, ceremonies and galas with participants from across the circumpolar region.
