Alberta earns 5-4 overtime win over Saskatchewan

RED DEER - The 2022 Alberta Challenge wrapped up on Sunday with South Black defeating North Yellow 3-1 to win the championship.

After starting off the tournament 0-2-0, South Black won their last two round-robin games to earn a spot in the final against undefeated North Yellow. Kara Mitenko scored both goals for South Black before Paige Zinger added an empty netter to seal the victory. Paige Smith scored the lone goal for North Yellow.

Earlier in the day, North Grey cruised to a 3-0 victory over North Blue in the fifth place game, while South White and South Green needed overtime to decide the third place winner. Keira Grant would bury the OT winner for South White.

Through two successful Hockey Alberta Spring Showcase events, the three-week stretch of tournaments will wrap up next week with the 2022 Prospects Cup. The tournament will feature 16 games among eight teams from all around the province. Gameplay at the Prospects Cup will begin on Thursday, May 12 at 11:30am with a matchup between Calgary Red and South Black.

RED DEER - Through a busy first day at the 2022 Alberta Challenge in Red Deer, five games have been played, with North Yellow leading the way with four points.

North Yellow opened the tournament with a 2-1 win over South Black, and followed that up with a 3-2 victory over South White in the last game of the day.

South White and North Grey each finished the day going 1-1-0 and are currently tied at two points with South Green, who went 1-0-0 defeating North Blue. White and Grey each earned their win over South Black.

Day two of the Alberta Challenge features four games, starting with North Grey versus South Green at 10am at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer.

RED DEER - Hockey Alberta’s Spring Showcase continues on Thursday as the 2022 Alberta Challenge gets underway in Red Deer.

Six teams, comprised of 120 of the province’s top 2007 and 2008-born female athletes, are taking to the ice at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre from Thursday to Sunday: North Blue, North Grey, North Yellow, South Black, South Green, and South White.

The teams will play in a four-day, tournament-format competition with the top two round-robin seeds playing for the championship.

Full tournament results will be displayed on the score ticker at the top of abchallenge.ca, where you can also find schedules, stats and standings. All 2022 Alberta Challenge games will be streamed live on HockeyTV. You can also follow along with the action on Twitter.

Tournament passes are still available online or at the door for $42 (includes GST and service fee), and children 12 and under will be free of charge. Day Passes will also be available at the door or online for $10.50 each.

Throughout the weekend 50/50 tickets are available for purchase online. Proceeds from the Hockey Alberta’s Team Alberta 50/50 will be used to offset athlete costs, enhance the athlete experience, and provide development opportunities for Team Alberta coaches and support staff.

The Alberta Challenge is a grassroots program that aids in the preparation, evaluation, and identification of potential players for Hockey Alberta’s Team Alberta program. Through the camps, the players are able to measure themselves against other players of the same age and receive instruction from some of the best coaches in the province. For those selected to the regional teams, the Alberta Challenge is a taste of top level competition.

RED DEER - Alberta Black won a shootout thriller over Alberta Grey on Sunday to claim the 2022 Alberta Cup in Red Deer.

Down 5-3 with just over two minutes to go, Alberta Grey got within one, and scored again with 30 seconds left to force overtime. After the extra frame solved nothing, Aiden Foster scored the lone goal of the shootout to seal the victory for Alberta Black.

Earlier in the day, Alberta Yellow took third place in the tournament with a 6-1 win over Alberta Green, and Alberta Blue edged Alberta Red 6-5 in a shootout in the fifth place game.

RED DEER - Through the final day of round robin action, Alberta Grey and Alberta Black sit atop the standings and will play for the 2022 Alberta Cup on Sunday.

Grey began the day in first place and would stay as the top seed with a 6-3 win over Alberta Blue in the final game of the day. Alberta Black secured their spot in the final with a 7-2 victory over Alberta Red. Both teams went undefeated in the round robin with Alberta Grey sporting a 3-0-1-0 record and Alberta Black with a 2-0-2-0 record. During the first day of the Alberta Cup, the two teams played to a 3-3 draw.

In the first game of the day, Alberta Green secured their first win with a 3-2 victory over Alberta Yellow.

The final day of the tournament will feature Alberta Blue taking on Alberta Red in the fifth place game at 8:30am, Alberta Green vs. Alberta Yellow for third place at 11:15am, and the championship game starting at 2:00pm.

RED DEER – The rosters for Prospects Cup have been selected by Hockey Alberta. The top 160 2009-born male athletes will hit the ice in Red Deer at the Gary W. Harris Centre, May 12-15.

The Prospects Cup is the first step of the Hockey Alberta Development program. It provides second-year U13 athletes, coaches, trainers and administrators an opportunity to discover the qualities of competitive hockey in a well-organized regional camp and select team competition. Athletes eligible for the Hockey Alberta Prospects Cup must be registered with a Hockey Canada/Hockey Alberta program.

Rosters were selected following four regional camps held April 15-17 in Calgary, Edmonton, Olds and Vegreville. Players are divided into eight teams (two teams from each camp).

“The level of skill exhibited at all four regional camps was very impressive,” said Hudson Kelly, Hockey Alberta’s Coordinator, Elite Male Hockey. “We’re looking forward to watching the young talent that will be showcased at the Prospects Cup in three weeks.”

The Prospects Cup is a four-day, tournament-format competition. Thursday, May 12 and Friday, May 13, begin with a skills session each morning followed by four games each day and four games on Saturday. The finals are slated for Sunday.

The 2022 Prospects Cup returns after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

CALGARY – Two Albertans have been selected to represent Canada at the 2022 IIHF U18 World Championship. Josh Davies (Airdrie) and Rieger Lorenz (Calgary) will head to Germany as part of the Canadian contingent. Both players competed in the 2019 Alberta Cup and 2017 Prospects Cup (then known as the Peewee Prospects Cup)

Joining Davies and Lorenz from Alberta will be Goaltending Coach, Brad Kirkwood (Calgary) and Equipment Manager, A.J. Murley (Beaumont).

On April 18, Hockey Canada unveiled the 25 players named to Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team for the 2022 IIHF U18 World Championship, April 23-May 1 in Landshut and Kaufbeuren, Germany.

The three goaltenders, eight defencemen and 14 forwards who will look to defend Canada’s 2021 gold medal were selected by Alan Millar (Tottenham, Ont.), director of player personnel, and Benoit Roy (Sudbury, Ont.), manager of hockey operations, with assistance from Scott Salmond (Creston, B.C.), senior vice-president of hockey operations.

The roster includes one player who won gold at the 2021 IIHF U18 World Championship (Bedard), three players who participated in the 2021 Capital City Challenge (Dragicevic, Howe, Wood) and three players who won bronze at the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games (Delic, Fantilli, Fimis).

“We are excited to unveil the 25 players that will wear the Maple Leaf at the 2022 IIHF U18 World Championship and take on the challenge of winning a second-consecutive gold medal,” said Millar. “For many of these players, this is the first time they will represent their country in international competition, and we know they are excited for the opportunity to compete on the world stage.”

Canada will open the 2022 IIHF U18 World Championship against the United States on April 23 at 1:30 p.m. ET/10:30 a.m. PT, and will also take host Germany on April 24 and Czechia on April 26.

TSN and RDS, the official broadcast partners of Hockey Canada, will broadcast 13 games throughout the tournament, including all Team Canada preliminary-round games, four quarterfinals, both semifinals, and the bronze and gold medal games.

Since 2002, Canada has won four gold medals at the IIHF U18 World Championship (2003, 2008, 2013, 2021), in addition to one silver (2005) and three bronze (2012, 2014, 2015).

Approximately 80 players from this year’s competition will be selected to attend Team Alberta’s Provincial Camp in July, with a chance to represent their province at the 2023 Canada Winter Games in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

Hockey Alberta would like to congratulate Emerson Jarvis and Howie Draper who would have represented Canada at the 2022 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship.

Jarvis has been recognized as one of the 23 players - three goaltenders, seven defence and 13 forwards - that would have represented Canada National Women’s Under-18 Team this month. Draper was set to step behind the bench as head coach.

Canada was looking to earn its first gold medal since 2019 in Linköping and Mjölby, Sweden, but the ongoing uncertainty and changing landscape of the COVID-19 pandemic forced the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) to cancel the championship for the second consecutive year, just two weeks before the puck dropped.

“Our disappointment of not competing in the championship this month does not overshadow the dedication and hard work our athletes and staff put in to be ready to compete,” said Gina Kingsbury, director of hockey operations. “I am extremely proud of this group. It is crucial for the development of these athletes, as well as the growth of the women’s game, to be able to hold this tournament, and we remain hopeful there is an opportunity for them to showcase their talents and represent Canada on the world stage in the near future.”

Draper, who led Canada to gold and silver at the 2019 and 2020 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championships, returned for his fourth year behind the bench. He is joined by assistant coaches Vicky Sunohara (Scarborough, Ont./University of Toronto, OUA) and Tara Watchorn (Newcastle, Ont./Stonehill College, NEWHA), and goaltending coach Gord Woodhall (Winnipeg, Man./Winnipeg, MFHL).

Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team has won five gold medals (2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2019), seven silver medals (2008, 2009, 2011, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2020) and one bronze (2018) at the IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship.

All events are taking place in Red Deer at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in April and May.

2022 Alberta Cup

Hockey Alberta is seeking one head coach, two assistant coaches and one trainer for each of the six Alberta Cup regional teams. The Alberta Cup will feature male players born in 2007.

The 2022 Prospect Cup runs from May 11-15. Regional camps will run April 15-17 in Olds, Calgary, Vegreville and Edmonton.

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, MB - Team Alberta fell 3-2 to Team BC in overtime of the gold medal game at the 2021 Western Regional Women’s U18 Championship.

Team Alberta got off to an early lead thanks to Ryann Perrett’s tournament-leading sixth goal. but BC answered back late in the period to tie things up.

Hanna Perrier gave Alberta a 2-1 lead late in the second period, before BC tied things up again early on in the third.

With no goals being scored the rest of the way in regulation, the game went to extra time, where BC scored the winner shortly after the halfway mark of the period.

Team captain Cassidy Rhodes was named Alberta’s Player of the Game. Perrett was named as the tournament’s top forward after recording 11 points in five games. Emerson Jarvis was awarded Most Valuable Player of the tournament with nine points in five games.

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, MB - Team Alberta will play for gold at the 2021 Western Regional Women’s U18 Championship after sealing a 2-0 victory over Team Saskatchewan on Friday afternoon.

The game remained scoreless until the midway point of the second period when Evelyn Lawrence found the puck in a scramble and buried it to give Alberta the 1-0 lead.

The third period went back and forth until Robyn Brokenshire scored to make it 2-0 with just 2:42 left to play. Farah Walker would shut the door the rest of the way to cap off the win.

After recording a shutout, Walker was named Alberta’s Player of the Game. She turned away 20 shots in the game, while Alberta put 35 towards the Saskatchewan net.

Team Alberta will play in the championship game Saturday afternoon at 2:30pm MDT at Stride Place in Portage la Prairie, MB. Their opponent will be determined after the second semi-final game between Manitoba and British Columbia. All games can be streamed on HockeyTV.

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, MB - Team Alberta clinched the first seed at the 2021 Western Regional Women’s U18 Championship with a 2-1 victory over Team British Columbia Thursday afternoon.

Team British Columbia scored the first goal just a few minutes into the game but Alberta would respond quickly when Ryann Perrett scored her fifth goal of the tournament to make it 1-1.

After no goals were scored in the second period, it took until late in the third period when Haley Trudeau scored to put Team Alberta up 2-1, a lead which they would hang on to.

Payten Evans was named Alberta’s player of the game.

Goaltender Ridleigh Hanson made 23 saves for the win, with Alberta landing 25 shots on BC.

Team Alberta will play in the first semi-final on Friday morning at 11:15am MDT at Stride Place in Portage la Prairie, MB. Their opponent will be determined after the final round robin game Thursday evening. All games can be streamed on HockeyTV.

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, MB - Team Alberta improved to 2-0-0 at the 2021 Western Regional Women’s U18 Championship with a 4-2 victory over Team Manitoba Wednesday evening.

Manitoba would open the scoring and take their 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Alberta got off to a quick start in the second as Ryann Perrett would score first for Alberta, en route to a three goal period with Payten Evans and Sadie Makokis also finding the net. That momentum carried into the third with Perrett scoring her second goal of the game to give Alberta a 4-1 lead. Manitoba would score once more to cut the lead to 4-2, which ultimately ended as the final score.

With her two goal performance, Perrett was named Alberta’s player of the game.

Goaltender Farah Walker made 25 saves in the victory, while Alberta fired 31 shots at the Manitoba net.

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, MB - Team Alberta opened up the 2021 Western Regional Women’s U18 Championship with a 7-1 win over Team Saskatchewan Tuesday afternoon.

After Saskatchewan got on the board first, Alberta responded quickly when Emerson Jarvis scored on the power play to tie the game up at 1-1. Alberta would keep rolling from there as Ryann Perrett would score with less than 30 seconds left in the first period to give Alberta a 2-1 lead at the break.

Perrett would net her second of the game as the only goal in the second period and Alberta would lead 3-1 heading to the third. Alberta would put the game away in the third with goals from Jarvis (2), Keana McKibbin, and Jorja Nystrom to cap off a 7-1 victory.

With a hat trick and three assists, Jarvis was named Alberta’s player of the game. Her linemate Perrett accounted for two goals and three assists in the contest.

Netminder Ridleigh Hanson made 16 saves for the win, while Alberta fired 24 shots Saskatchewan’s way.

RED DEER - Another Team Alberta comeback fell just short on Sunday, as Team BC took gold at the 2021 WHL Cup with a 5-2 win.

After a scoreless opening period, BC got on the board first just over a minute into the second period, before Gavin Garland evened things up with his third of the tournament five minutes later.

BC would score again late in the second, and took a 2-1 lead into the third after netminder Jesse Sanche stopped Alberta forward Zane Saab on a penalty shot.

Five minutes into the third, BC took a 3-1 lead, but Alberta made it a one goal game once again as Garrett Thom scored on a short-handed breakaway with just over five minutes to go in regulation.

BC shut the door from there, and scored two empty-net goals to take it 5-2.

Netminder Madden Mulawka stood tall in goal for Team Alberta, stopping 32 of 35 shots, while his counterpart Sanche made 30 saves for the win.

Mulawka was named Alberta’s Player of the Game for the second straight day, while defenceman Keith McInnis was named a WHL Cup All-Star for his efforts throughout the tournament.

RED DEER - Team Alberta punched its ticket to the 2021 WHL Cup finals with a 2-0 win over Manitoba on Saturday afternoon.

Gavin Garland opened the scoring halfway through the first, and Alberta took a 2-0 lead in the latter half of the second period as Coy Pighin fired home his first goal of the tournament.

From there, netminder Madden Mulawka, in his second start, shut the door, earning the shutout win with 24 saves. For his efforts, he was named Team Alberta’s Player of the Game.

Alberta draws BC in the gold medal game, who defeated Saskatchewan 9-2 on Saturday morning. Despite coming back from a 4-1 deficit in the third period, Alberta fell 5-4 in overtime to BC when the two teams met on Friday during round-robin play.

Manitoba will face Saskatchewan Sunday at 10am in the bronze medal game, while Alberta and BC square off at 1pm. Both games are at the Peavey Mart Centrium in Red Deer, and are free to attend. (COVID-19 protocals will be in place for all attendees).

RED DEER - Team Alberta opened up the 2021 WHL Cup with a 6-2 win over Team Manitoba Wednesday night.

Alberta got off to a quick start with goals from Garrett Thom and Zane Saab in the first three minutes, with Captain Caleb Hadland adding another marker late in the first.

After a scoreless second period, Manitoba rebounded with a pair of goals early in the third, before Alberta responded with three straight goals from Saab, Thom, and Finn McLaughlin to seal the 6-2 win.

With a pair of goals and an assist, Saab was named Alberta’s player of the game. Forward Nathan Free also notched three points for Alberta with a three assist game.

Netminder Madden Mulawka made 16 saves for the win, while Alberta fired 29 shots Manitoba’s way.

Alberta is back at it Thursday night against Team Saskatchewan (0-1) at 7:00pm at the Peavey Mart Centrium in Red Deer.

RED DEER – Hockey Alberta has named the 20-player roster that will sport the Team Alberta colours at the inaugural 2021 Western Regional Women’s U18 Championship in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, November 1-6.

The roster features 10 players who competed at the 2020 Alberta Winter Games and nine players who dressed for the 2019 Alberta Challenge.

“It has been a very interesting and challenging 2021 U18 Team Alberta experience for players, parents and staff. The ability for everyone involved to pivot throughout the process leads me to believe we have a very resilient bunch heading into a western competition,” said Team Alberta U18 Head Coach, Barry Medori. “I am proud of all participants from the first camp to the final selections. All athletes made coming up with a final list of 20 athletes to represent Alberta extremely difficult.”

The selection process was different this year. In August, Hockey Alberta welcomed 136 players to Red Deer for the Summer Selection Camp. Over the course of three days, the players were evaluated with 36 invitations extended to the Fall Camp from which the 20-player roster was selected.

“We are preparing to make Alberta proud with our team a few short weeks away from competing for a championship. I am excited to see what we can achieve with this group of amazing athletes, training staff and coaches,” said Medori.

Medori will be joined on the bench by assistant coaches Shanya Shwetz and Chris Leeming. Rounding out the team’s staff are Annette Jensen (Video Coach), Marlène Boissonnault (Goalie Coach), and Kendall Newell (Director of Operations).

Twelve Minor Hockey Associations are represented on the team, including: Airdrie, Beaumont, Calgary, Calmar, Chestermere, Edmonton, Lethbridge, Mundare, Red Deer, Sherwood Park, St. Albert and Strathcona. Eleven team members are competing in the AFHL this season.

Team Alberta will compete against teams from Manitoba, Saskatchewan and B.C. at the 2021 Western Regional Women’s U18 Championship. A three-game round robin will be played, followed by semi-finals with teams advancing to either the Bronze or Gold Medal final. A schedule and ticket information will be available in the coming weeks.

RED DEER - Thirty-six players from across Alberta have been selected to attend the 2021 Team Alberta U18 Female Fall Camp.

The Fall Camp roster is comprised of 2004-2005 born players, including four goaltenders, 12 defence and 20 forwards.

TEAM ALBERTA U18 FEMALE FALL CAMP INVITES

The camp will run September 24-26 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer. The Team Alberta squad that will compete at the 2021 National Women’s U18 Championship in Dawson Creek, BC will be named following the fall camp.

Players earned Fall Camp invitations through the Summer Selection Camp held August 13-15 in Red Deer. The summer camp was a three-day session where a total of 136 players participated in on-ice sessions that included game formats.

“It was extremely exciting to get these players back on the ice for summer camp over the course of three days," said Kendall Newell, Hockey Alberta’s Manager of Female Hockey. “As an open camp, we were able to see more talent from across the province and are very pleased with the level of competition that was displayed, and are confident that this success will transfer over to our upcoming fall camp.”

The 2021 Team Alberta tryout was open to any 2004-2005 born player from Alberta registered in a Hockey Alberta/Hockey Canada sanctioned program in the 2020-21 season.

RED DEER - Seventy-two players from across Alberta have been selected to attend the 2021 Team Alberta U16 Male Fall Camp.

The Fall Camp roster is comprised of 2006 born players, including eight goaltenders, 24 defence and 40 forwards.

The camp will run September 17-19 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer. The Team Alberta squad that will compete at the WHL Cup will be named following the fall camp.

Players earned Fall Camp invitations through the Summer Regional Camp held August 3-8 in Red Deer. The summer camp was divided into three, two-day regional sessions where a total of 394 players participated in on-ice sessions that included game formats.

“This year has been an anomaly on many levels, including our camp process,” said Michael Kraichy, Hockey Alberta’s Manager of Elite Male Hockey. “We opened the camp so we were able to see more talent from across the province and we are confident that the fall camp will offer a selection of competitive and skilled individuals for Team Alberta.”

The 2021 Team Alberta tryout was open to any 2006 born player from Alberta registered in a Hockey Alberta/Hockey Canada sanctioned program in the 2020-21 season.

RED DEER – Hockey Alberta is ready to host players from across the province at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer for the 2021 Team Alberta Summer Development Camps, fuelled by Gatorade. Team Alberta camps will span from July 26 – August 15.

The Team Alberta U16 Female Skill Development Camp runs from July 26-29. Focusing on position-specific skills, each position will participate in four on-ice sessions over two days.

Following the female camp, the Team Alberta U16 Male Summer Camp will take place August 3-8. There will be three, two-day camps broken up by region (South Region August 3-4, Central Region August 5-6 and North Region August 7-8). The camp is the first step in the identification process for the WHL Cup, slated for October of 2021. A selection camp will be held September 17-19.

The Team Alberta U18 Female Summer Camp is scheduled to run from August 13-15, rounding out the trio of development camps. Players will participate in three on-ice sessions and an additional goaltender session. The U18 Female Fall Camp is planned for September 24-26, where players will be identified for the 2021 National Women’s U18 Championship set for November in Dawson Creek, B.C.

Registration for the U16 and U18 camps was open to players from Alberta registered in a Hockey Alberta/Hockey Canada sanctioned program in the 2020-21 season. The U16 camps feature players born in 2006, while the U18 camp was open to 2004 and 2005 born players.

Coaches will also be in Red Deer on August 20-22 to complete the National Coaching Certification Program High Performance 1 (HP1) certification. All head coaches coaching U15 AAA, U16 AAA, U18 AAA, Junior A and Canadian Sport Schools Hockey League teams must be HP1 certified.

RED DEER – Hockey Alberta has selected Ashley Shrode (Barrhead) to lead Team Alberta as the head coach of the 2021 U18 Female team.

Joining Shrode on the bench as assistant coaches are Shanya Shwetz (Edmonton) and Chris Leeming (Olds). Rounding out the coaching staff are Annette Jensen (Lloydminster) as video coach and Marlène Boissonnault (Calgary) as goaltending coach.

“It is an exciting time for Team Alberta as we get to resume our selection process for the 2021 U18 Women’s National Championships,” said Kendall Newell, Manager, Female Hockey for Hockey Alberta. “We are extremely pleased to announce this staff group and to get the process started as we look forward to summer camp."

Team Alberta will hold summer camp in August in Red Deer to select the U18 Female team that will represent the province at the 2021 Women’s National Championships slated for later this fall in Dawson Creek, BC.

Shrode was named the 2021 BFL Female Community Coach of the Year for Alberta, and has spent her most recent years coaching in the Barrhead and Whitecourt Minor Hockey Associations. She has also spent time within the Team Alberta program as a Head Coach at the 2018 Alberta Winter Games and 2019 Alberta Challenge, before moving on to become a Coach Mentor at the 2020 Alberta Winter Games.

Shwetz has spent the past three years with the Edmonton Female Athletic Club (EFAC) as a head and assistant coach with the U15 AA Pandas. With Team Alberta, her experience has been vast, as she has coached at the U16 Female Summer Camp twice, was an assistant coach at the 2019 Alberta Challenge, and head coach at the 2020 Alberta Winter Games. At the U18 level, Shwetz was named as the video coach for the 2019 Women’s National Championships in Morden & Winkler, MB. She was also named as the Alberta’s BFL Female High Performance Coach of the Year in 2019.

Leeming is the heading into his fourth season as head coach of the ACAC’s Olds College Broncos, where he was named the 2019-20 ACAC Women’s Hockey Coach of the Year. He has been a head coach at both the 2019 Alberta Challenge and 2020 Alberta Winter Games.

Jensen is the head coach of the Lloydminster U18AAA PWM Steelers, with ten years of coaching experience, and Boissonnault is currently a goaltender with Team Scotiabank of the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association and goaltender coach with Top Prospects Goaltending.

Other members of the staff for Team Alberta U18 Female include: Barry Medori (Spruce Grove), coach mentor; and Kendall Newell (Red Deer), director of operations.

RED DEER - Registration is now open for Hockey Alberta’s 2021 U16 Female Development Camp, Fuelled by Gatorade, which runs July 26-29 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer.

This is a position specific skill development camp and is open to 2006 and 2007-born female athletes from Alberta who were registered with a Hockey Canada/Hockey Alberta sanctioned program in the 2020-21 season. Each position will participate in 4 on-ice position specific skill sessions over two days:

• July 26-27 Goaltenders: positioning, movement, puck skills & tactics
• July 26-27 Defence: skating skills, puck skills, defending & shooting
• July 28-29 Forwards: skating skills, puck skills, deception & goal scoring

RED DEER – Hockey Alberta has selected Serge Lajoie (St. Albert) to lead Team Alberta as the head coach of the 2021 U16 Male team.

Joining Lajoie on the bench as assistant coaches are Alex Mandolidis (Calgary) and Kyle Tapp (Lloydminster). Rounding out the coaching staff are James Poole (Calgary) as video coach and Derek Purfield (Calgary) as goaltending coach.

“We are extremely excited to not only resume the Team Alberta process, but to do so with such an exceptional staff,” said Michael Kraichy, Manager, Elite Male Hockey for Hockey Alberta. “The combined experience amongst these coaches is second-to-none, and we’re looking forward to seeing what this group can accomplish.”

Team Alberta will hold summer and fall camps in August and September in Red Deer to select the U16 Male team that will represent the province at the 2021 WHL Cup slated for later this fall.

Lajoie – currently the Head Coach of the OHA Edmonton U18 Prep team – has a storied history in the Team Alberta program. In 2011, he won a bronze medal at the Canada Winter Games as an assistant coach. In 2013, he was the head coach of Team Alberta at the Western Canada Challenge Cup (now the WHL Cup), leading the team to the gold medal.

Mandolidis is entering his third season as an assistant coach with the Mount Royal University Cougars. He has also been a fixture within Hockey Alberta programming. As video coach with Team Alberta, he won a bronze medal at the 2019 Canada Winter Games and silver at the 2017 WHL Cup. He has also had various roles at the Alberta Cup.

Tapp is the head coach of the Lloydminster U18 AAA Bobcats of the Alberta Elite Hockey League. He brought home a silver medal as an assistant coach with Team Alberta from the 2012 Western Canada Challenge Cup. He has also volunteered as a coach and mentor in the Alberta Cup program.

Poole is a head coach at the Edge School for Athletes in Calgary and Purfield is the goalie coach for the Okotoks Oilers of the Alberta Junior Hockey League.

Other members of the staff for Team Alberta U16 Male include: Bobby Fox (Calgary), head scout; Barry Medori (Spruce Grove), coach mentor; and Michael Kraichy (Red Deer), director of operations.

Team Alberta U16 Male Summer Camp

Team Alberta U16 Male Summer Camp is open to 2006-born male athletes from Alberta who were registered with a Hockey Canada/Hockey Alberta sanctioned program in the 2020-21 season. The camp runs August 3-8 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer.

The Camp will be broken into three two-day camps based on region:

• August 3-4: South Region
• August 5-6: Central Region
• August 7-8: North Region

Each player will participate in three on-ice sessions, with an additional session for goaltenders.

Registration for Team Alberta U16 Male Summer Camp will open on Friday, June 11 at 10am. Please note that space in the camp is limited, and registration is on a first come, first served basis.

Team Alberta U16 Male Fall Camp will run September 17-19, with the 2021 WHL Cup tentatively set for October.

Team Alberta U18 Female Summer Camp is open to 2004 and 2005-born female athletes from Alberta who were registered with a Hockey Canada/Hockey Alberta sanctioned program in the 2020-21 season. The camp runs August 10-15 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer.

The Camp will be broken into two three-day camps based on region:

• August 10-12: South Region
• August 13-15: North Region

Registration for Team Alberta U18 Female Summer Camp will open on Monday, June 14 at 10am. Please note that space in the camp is limited, and registration is on a first come, first served basis.

Team Alberta U18 Female Fall Camp will run September 24-26, with the 2021 National Women’s U18 Championship set for October 31 – November 6 in Dawson Creek, BC.

RED DEER - Due to the current Government of Alberta restrictions regarding youth sports, Hockey Alberta is postponing all Team Alberta High Performance Selection Camps.

The postponement includes selection camps for the Alberta Cup, Alberta Challenge and Prospects Cup.

Hockey Alberta currently is looking at alternative solutions to implement if/when the Government of Alberta restrictions allow for meaningful competition in a selection camp format.

WHITEHORSE – The Arctic Winter Games International Committee (AWGIC), following discussions with Wood Buffalo 2022 Arctic Winter Games Host Society, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) and the Government of Alberta, has made the decision to postpone the Wood Buffalo 2022 Arctic Winter Games in a planned and proactive response to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The Games, originally scheduled to take place in Wood Buffalo from March 6-12, 2022, will be rescheduled to a later date to be announced.

Held every two years, the Arctic Winter Games is the premier circumpolar sport and cultural event for youth hosting up to 2,000 participants and an equal number of volunteers.

The decision to plan the postponement of the Games was made to ensure the health and safety of all the participants, coaches, volunteers, staff, spectators, and the host community. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic would likely prevent the Arctic Winter Games International Committee from delivering on their mission to host a meaningful Arctic Winter Games experience.

No decision has been made at this time on the new dates for the Arctic Winter Games in Wood Buffalo. The Arctic Winter Games International Committee and the Wood Buffalo Host Society are diligently working together to determine an appropriate date for the Games to be rescheduled and intend to announce that date in the near future. Both organizations will continue to prioritize the health and safety of all Games participants while monitoring the global pandemic and providing updates to all stakeholders on the Wood Buffalo Arctic Winter Games, as they become available.
