RED DEER - Team Alberta scores five straight goals en route to a 5-4 overtime win against Saskatchewan Thursday night.
Following an 8-2 loss to BC on Wednesday, Saskatchewan came out of the gate hard against Alberta, scoring twice in the first 10 minutes of the game, and then again in the final seconds of the first period, and opening seconds of the second period to take a 4-0 lead.
Brock Souch put Alberta on the board just minutes later on the powerplay, and Gavin Garland added another second period tally to cut Saskatchewan’s lead to two heading into the third.
With Saskatchewan serving a double-minor, Keith McInnis scored from the point to make it a one goal game, and Zane Saab scored his third of the tournament short-handed to send the game to three-on-three overtime, where Marek Howell capped off the comeback for Alberta.
In his first start of the tournament, Christian Francis stopped 17 of 21 shots for the win, while Tristen Doyle (1a) earned Player of the Game honours.
Team Alberta (2-0-0) wraps up round-robin play on Friday afternoon against BC (2-0-0), who shut-out Manitoba (0-2-0) by a score of 5-0 earlier on Thursday. Game time is 12:30pm at the Peavey Mart Centrium in Red Deer, while Manitoba and Saskatchewan (0-1-1) square off at 3:15pm at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.
