Hockey Alberta officially announced Tuesday that Strathmore, Alberta will host the 2013 and 2014 Alberta Cup. The Strathmore hosting group is made up of Strathmore Minor Hockey Association and local volunteers. The 2013 Alberta Cup will take place at the Strathmore Family Centre, April 25-28, 2013. This will be the first time the Alberta Cup is held in Strathmore, and the first time the competition will take place on Olympic-sized ice.
“We’re extremely excited to bring this high-profile event to Strathmore, we look forward to the challenges, but mostly we look forward to bringing top-notch competition to Strathmore for everyone to see,” said Alberta Cup Host Committee Chairman, Wayne Hansen. “Town Council is really enthusiastic about the event and what it will ultimately bring to the community.”
The Alberta Cup is the premier hockey event in the province that helps identify the top male bantam aged players from each zone in Alberta. It is well attended by scouts as they prepare for the Western Hockey League’s bantam draft. In addition to player evaluations, the competition is also an opportunity for administrators, coaches, trainers and referees to be evaluated for future positions within the Team Alberta U16 Provincial Team, which will compete in the U16 Western Canada Challenge Cup in 2014 and eventually leads into the Team Pacific U17 Program.
“We’re very excited to bring the Alberta Cup to Strathmore,” said Hockey Alberta General Manager, Rob Litwinski. “We’ve held many camps at this facility and we feel it will be very easy to work with. The host committee is very eager and committed and we’re excited to work with them to make sure this event is a success.”
Hockey Alberta is proud to have the Western Hockey league, Reebok/CCM, Source for Sports and Alberta Sport, Receration, Parks and Wildlife Foundation as event sponsors.
The Alberta Cup Program begins in March each year with close to 1000 players trying out at their respective zone camps. Each of the 160 athletes playing in the Alberta Cup is competing for one of eighty invites to the U16 Male Provincial Camp in July. The U16 Male Provincial Camp is the final stage in the first year of the Team Alberta Program.
The Alberta Cup began back in 1986 as a program for midget hockey players. It was held again in 1987 and 1988 then disappeared until 1993 when it re-emerged as a bantam level competition.
Former Alberta Cup graduates include such players as Jordan Eberle, Braden Holtby, Devan Dubnyk, Tyler Ennis, Tyler Myers, Dany Heatley, Jay Bouwmeester, Dion Phaneuf, and Scott Hartnell.
