PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE UNDERWAY
The 2022-23 hockey season all comes down to this, the Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships presented by ATB. In total, 34 Provincial Champions will be crowned over three weekends. League play will determine four champions, while 30 divisions battle it out in a tournament style format. It all starts March 23!

TEAM ALBERTA NORTH WINS GOLD AND SILVER AT 2023 ARCTIC WINTER GAMES
Team Alberta North won one gold and one silver medal on home ice at the 2023 Arctic Winter Games. The Junior Female team went undefeated throughout the tournament en route to a gold medal. The U15 Male team battled to the end, but fell to Team NWT 6-5, ultimately finishing with silver. The U18 Male team finished round robin as the first seed, but lost two close games in the medal round to finish fourth.

Hockey Alberta has selected the 111 volunteers who will lead teams at the 2023 Spring Showcase. Each team will consist of a director of operations, coach mentor, head coach and two assistant coaches. Teams at the Alberta Cup and Alberta Challenge will include a trainer. Staff for each Alberta Challenge team also includes an apprentice coach.

COACH 1 CLINICS BEING OFFERED AT DISCOUNTED RATE FOR 2022-23
Hockey Alberta is proud to announce that all Coach 1 – Intro to Coach clinics will be offered a discounted rate of $22 (plus GST) for the 2022-23 season. The new one-time rate comes as part of the $1.5 million funding support provided by the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation in an effort to increase coach education at the U7 and U9 levels.

COACHING CLINIC REGISTRATION NOW OPEN FOR 2021-22 SEASON Coaching Clinic registration is now open for 2021-22. REGISTER NOW FOR HOCKEY ALBERTA’S MHA SAFETY LEADER TRAINING DAY On September 18, join Hockey Alberta for a day focusing on providing the opportunity for MHA Safety Leaders to develop their skills as leaders and share resources and best practices that will enhance safety within your association. Sessions will be held at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer, and made available online via Zoom. HOCKEY CANADA ANNOUNCES NEW MALTREATMENT PLAYING RULE FOR 2021-22 SEASON In furthering its commitment to being leaders in safety and inclusivity, Hockey Canada has introduced an update to its rulebook to focus on recognizing and reporting incidents of maltreatment. CHALLENGES, OPPORTUNITIES, AND POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS DISCUSSED DURING INDIGENOUS HOCKEY SUMMIT Indigenous youth face many challenges when it comes to participating in hockey in Alberta. And while the challenges are significant, the opportunities and potential solutions were an important focus during Friday night’s keynote discussion to open Hockey Alberta’s Indigenous Hockey Summit.

GROW THE GAME: ONLINE ANTI-RACISM RESOURCES Grant MacEwan University has developed the “Grow the Game” initiative for online anti-racism resources for hockey. The Rockies Hockey League squad is Alberta’s regional finalist in the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup. NORTHSTARS CARES AND HOCKEY ALBERTA FOUNDATION TEAM UP TO SUPPORT HEROS HOCKEY The Calgary Northstars U15 Players and their families have accepted a challenge to raise $10,000 for the SuperHEROS Program for the upcoming 2021-22 hockey season. This money will allow them to put another team on the ice from their existing wait list. The team, along with the help of The Hockey Alberta Foundation are organizing an online auction that will run the month of February 2021.

The event will bring together an elite panel of speakers who have officiated at a world class level. Each speaker, through personal experience, will offer insight, lessons learned, and potential pathways to aspiring, young officials.

HOCKEY CANADA UNVEILS 50/50 DRAW DETAILS FOR 2021 WORLD JUNIORS Although the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship will be played without fans in the arena in Edmonton, plans have been unveiled for fans in Alberta to engage in the World Juniors. COACH OF THE MONTH - RANDY ROSEN Hockey Alberta’s Coach of the Month, sponsored by Players Bench Team Apparel, is Randy Rosen of Sherwood Park. In August, Randy was diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer. Despite a very poor prognosis, Randy decided that he still had so much to give back to the community and that he wanted to continue coaching.

VIRA, ZINGER ELECTED TO HOCKEY ALBERTA BOARD | BARTLETT, HAYDEN RECOGNIZED AS LIFE MEMBERS
Al-Amir Vira and Frances Zinger were elected to the Hockey Alberta’s Board of Directors at the organization’s 113th Annual General Meeting held virtually on November 21. Bob Bartlett and Anne Hayden were also recognized with Life Membership status for their combined more than 90 years of service in the province of Alberta.

COVID-19 UPDATE - NOVEMBER 12 The Government of Alberta today announced a mandatory two-week pause on indoor group fitness classes and team sport activities. The pause applies to Edmonton and surrounding areas, Calgary and surrounding areas, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge, Fort McMurray and Red Deer. The full list of surrounding communities (for the Calgary and Edmonton regions) is available on the Government of Alberta website.

HOCKEY CANADA ASSIST FUND TO PROVIDE $1 MILLION TO HELP YOUNG CANADIANS RETURN TO HOCKEY The Hockey Canada Foundation has launched its new $1 million Assist Fund to provide registration fee subsidies for qualified Canadians who are registered with Hockey Canada-sanctioned associations for the 2020-21 season. The Hockey Alberta Foundation would also like to encourage groups and individuals to apply for a Program or Player Assistance grant through Every Kid Every Community.

JAKE NEIGHBOURS AND OZZY WIESBLATT: A FIRST ROUND FRIENDSHIP When Jake Neighbours and Ozzy Wiesblatt were drafted 26th overall and 31st overall by the St. Louis Blues and San Jose Sharks, respectively, it was not only a tremendous moment for each athlete, but a chance to celebrate each other’s accomplishments.
HOCKEY ALBERTA CONCUSSION SAFETY SEMINARS Hockey Alberta is once again offering Concussion Safety Seminars virtually for the 2020-21 season. This two hour interactive presentation delivered by industry professionals is designed for parents, coaches, administrators, and athletes to provide a consistent message on concussions and concussion management.
