Hockey Alberta Provincials is this province’s biggest and highest-profile grassroots ice hockey tournament. Hockey Alberta and its membership takes part in this event each hockey season and it features some of the most exciting hockey around.
Since 1970, Hockey Alberta Provincials has brought together the best hockey teams from around Alberta to compete in their respective age category to be named provincial champions. Participating in a provincial event is often the high point of a young players’ career, since in many cases, teams and players may only get one opportunity to attend a championship. This, coupled with the high level of competition, makes Provincials a unique and special event for everyone involved.
Each team that attends Provincials must qualify through the Playdown process. Teams wishing to compete for a Provincial Championship must declare their intent to participate in Provincial Play to the Zone Minor Regulation Coordinator by December 1 of the current hockey season. Each team that declares is then categorized according to Hockey Alberta regulations, and then each team plays one another in successive two-game-total-point series until all but one team is eliminated. The winning team is declared the zone representative, who then joins the host team to compete at the Hockey Alberta Provincials.
Provincials take place every hockey season during the months of March and April. A host is selected for each division in each category (from Atom to Senior), with the exception of Senior AAA, Junior A, Midget AAA Major, Midget AAA Female, Bantam AAA, and Bantam AAA Female.
Minor Hockey Associations (MHAs) who wish to host a Hockey Alberta Provincial event must submit a bid application to Hockey Alberta. The bid applications are then reviewed and compared with Hockey Alberta’s guidelines for hosting. More thorough bids have a higher likelihood of being chosen to host, in the case of multiple applicants.
The team of the MHA hosting must still participate in their respective category playdowns, even though they have an automatic entry into Provincials.
