The Alberta Cup program is a core Hockey Alberta Development Program. It provides players, coaches, trainers, administrators and referees an equal opportunity to discover the great qualities of competitive hockey in a well-organized and fair Zone Camp and Select Team competition. The Alberta Cup program begins with Zone Camps (one in each of the 8 zones) that are designed to give all players, coaches, trainers and referees an opportunity to show their skills as well as receive top level instruction and evaluation from quality people identified by Hockey Alberta. The Alberta Cup prides itself on the aspects of equality and fairness when evaluating and selecting the top 20 athletes, 3 coaches, 1 trainer and 2 referees to represent each zone in the Alberta Cup competition. At the end of the four month process the Alberta Cup leads able participants to the Team Alberta Program – U16 Male Provincial Camp.

The Alberta Cup Program begins in March each year with over 1000 players trying out at their respective zone camps. There are eight Alberta Cup zones and each player is attempting to land 1 of 20 spots on each of the eight teams. The eight zone teams will then compete in the Alberta Cup Tournament in April of each year. Athletes eligible for the 2012 Alberta Cup program are male players that were born in 1997.
